If accepted, this extended abstract will be published in the proceedings of the conference. Posters will be prominently displayed and presented during a session in the conference. The extended abstract should be structured similar to a technical paper, and may not exceed 2 letter-sized (8.5 x 11) pages including figures, tables and references using the IEEE format for conference proceedings (PDF, single-spaced, double column, 10pt text). The objective of the eScience Conference is to promote and encourage all aspects of eScience and its associated technologies, applications, and tools. The way in which research is carried out is undergoing a series of radical changes as a result of the digital revolution. Researchers in all disciplines are increasingly adopting digital tools, techniques and practices in communities and projects that span multiple disciplines, laboratories, organizations, and national boundaries. eScience 2017 brings together leading international and interdisciplinary research communities, developers, and users of eScience applications and enabling IT technologies. This interdisciplinary workshop is organized to explore the scientific issues, challenges, and opportunities for supercomputing beyond the scaling limits of Moore's Law, with the ultimate goal of keeping supercomputing at the forefront of computing technologies beyond the physical and conceptual limits of current systems. Continuing progress of supercomputing beyond the scaling limits of Moore's Law is likely to require a comprehensive re-thinking of technologies, ranging from innovative materials and devices, circuits, system architectures, programming systems, system software, and applications. The workshop is designed to foster interdisciplinary dialog across the necessary spectrum of stakeholders: applications, algorithms, software, and hardware. Motivating workshop questions will include the following. "What technologies might prevail in the Post Moore's Era?" "How can applications effectively prepare for these changes through co-design?" "What architectural abstractions should be in place to represent the traditional concepts like hierarchical parallelism, multi-tier data locality, and new concepts like variable precision, approximate solutions, and resource tradeoff directives?" They provide a systematic way of describing a complex scientific process and rely on sophisticated workflow management systems to execute on a variety of parallel and distributed resources. With the dramatic increase of raw data volume in every domain, they play an even more critical role to assist scientists in organizing and processing their data and to leverage HPC or HTC resources, being at the interface between end-users and computing infrastructures. This workshop focuses on the many facets of data-intensive workflow management systems, ranging from actual execution to service management and the coordination and optimization of data, service and job dependencies. ======================================================================= International Workshop on Representative Applications (WRAp 2017) https://wrap17.github.io/ to be held in conjunction with IEEE Cluster 2017 https://cluster17.github.io Paper submission deadline: July 7th 2017 The International Workshop on Representative Applications is concerned with the development and use of representative applications (mini-applications or proxies) for all aspects of high-performance computing. The challenges posed by future systems: new architectures, programming models, and machine scales; mean that representative applications as an essential tool in the path towards exascale. These applications can be used for acceptance testing, benchmarking, optimization evaluation, and also investigating the performance of new architectures or programming models. However, the development of such representative applications must ensure they maintain some correspondence with their parent application, so requires methods and tools for identifying the performance critical aspects of a given code, or class of codes, and also for verifying that the proxy effectively models the the target behavior. The main aim of WRAp is to provide a venue in which the wide range of disciplines involved in creating and using representative applications can share important discoveries and lessons learned from these applications. Topics of Interest: Programming model and language explorations Design and generation of representative applications New representative applications Verification and validation of representative applications Optimizations, including: algorithmic improvements, and code optimization Scalability studies Hardware studies Case-studies of representative applications impacting their parent code Work which examines similar topics will also be considered for inclusion in the workshop. ======================================================================== BigDig: High-Throughput Digitization for Natural History Collections (BigDig 2017) held as part of eScience 2017, Auckland, NZ, October 2017 http://press3.mcs.anl.gov/bigdig/ *********** DEADLINE EXTENDED: 14 JULY 2017 *********** ======================================================================== The BigDig workshop (http://press3.mcs.anl.gov/bigdig/) will be held on 24 October 2017 in conjunction with the 13th IEEE International Conference on eScience, Auckland, New Zealand. It will focus on high-throughput digitization, driven by the keen need to move the world’s physical collections into the digital realm where they are safer from the ravages of time, can be used by larger numbers of scientists and the public, and can contribute in new ways to the study of biodiversity. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: • Digitization technologies for high-throughput 2D and 3D capture of collection objects • Instrumentation strategies and algorithms • Specimen handling, label information capture, OCR, crowd-sourced label transcription, 3D reconstruction • Digitization requirements, metadata, image and 3D fidelity, time and resource constraints, speed • Workflows for high-throughput digitization of natural history collections • Data management for large and perhaps distributed digital collections of such data • Interface requirements, issues, and solutions both for scientific research and for public outreach to extremely large virtual collections • Applications of the resulting data resource to potentially new science and approaches as evidenced by theoretical models, case studies, parallels with existing similar data resources There is a wealth of untapped potential captured in the animal and plant collections held by museums of natural history around the world. Novel discovery processes will be catalyzed by the existence of large, curated, inter-comparable digital collections of specimen data. However, it has been noted that current methods may not be able to digitize the existing backlog of an estimated ~1.5 billion specimens, distributed across 1000+ collections, in the next 30 years or more. Obtaining information on labels of 500 million entomological specimens is particularly challenging. It may even be impossible to keep up with the rate of expansion of these collections as new specimens are added. Despite successful ongoing efforts, more needs to be done in terms of technology development across the ingest pipeline in order to meet this daunting challenge. Therefore, it is important and timely that a workshop of practitioners continues to expand upon discussion of how to advance the technology of high-throughput specimen digitization and ingest to match the requirements of this complex but ultimately richly rewarding problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Authors are invited to submit unpublished, original work, using the IEEE 8.5 x 11 manuscript guidelines: double-column text using single-spaced 10-point font on 8.5 x 11 inch pages.
