*** CALL FOR PAPERS *** 1st International Workshop on Distributed Machine Learning for the Intelligent Computing Continuum (DML-ICC) In conjunction with the 14th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing (UCC 2021) December 6-9, 2021 Leicester, UK http://www.lrc.ic.unicamp.br/dml-icc/ ### Background ### As the cloud extends to the fog and to the edge, computing services can be scattered over a set of computing resources that encompass users’ devices, the cloud, and intermediate computing infrastructure deployed in between. Moreover, increasing networking capacity promises lower delays in data transfers, enabling a continuum of computing capacity that can be used to process large amounts of data with reduced response times. Such large amounts of data are frequently processed through machine learning approaches, seeking to extract knowledge from raw data generated and consumed by a widely heterogeneous set of applications. Distributed machine learning has been evolving as a tool to run learning tasks also at the edge, often immediately after the data is produced, instead of transferring data to the centralized cloud for later aggregation and processing. The DML-ICC workshop aims to be a forum for discussion among researchers with a distributed machine learning background and researchers from parallel/distributed systems and computer networks. By bringing together these research topics, we look forward in building an Intelligent Computing Continuum, where distributed machine learning models can seamlessly run on any device from the edge to the cloud, creating a distributed computing system that is able to fulfill highly heterogeneous applications requirements and build knowledge from data generated by these applications. ### Topics ### DML-ICC 2021 workshop aims to attract researchers from the machine learning community, especially the ones involved with distributed machine learning techniques, and researchers from the parallel/distributed computing communities. Together, these researchers will be able to build resource management mechanisms that are able to fulfill machine learning jobs requirements, but also use machine learning techniques to improve resource management in large distributed systems. PROGRAM CHAIRS Patrick Bridges, University of New Mexico Carlos Eduardo Arango Gutierrez, Red Hat OVERVIEW Technologies such as containers and virtual machines enable users to define and build their own software environments, and then run them on different resources in a portable, reproducible manner. These new workflows, with users directly participating in creating and managing isolated environments with tools are a transformational capability. In addition to greater flexibility and agility for users, other benefits include greater portability and reduced system administration costs. In particular, they make tractable a much-desired paradigm shift in software deployment, enabling an HPC application and its environment to be moved between platforms ranging from development laptops and desktops to exascale HPC systems. There are numerous questions regarding best practices, foundational concepts, tools, and standards for using containers in HPC systems. Our goal is to promote and accelerate the adoption and impact of these new ecosystems to better address HPC use cases. This workshop serves as a key venue for presenting late-breaking research, sharing experiences and best practices, and fostering collaboration in this field. SCOPE The scope of this workshop is to better understand and improve user-defined, bring-your-own, isolated, and related software environments for HPC. The most well-known approaches are containers and virtualization, but anything to further these goals is welcome. Topics include research and practical experience reports in areas including but not limited to: • Container runtimes, virtual machines, architectures, and related technologies • Orchestration, resource management, and scheduling • Expressive container information, including labels, build state, and other metadata • Containers and orchestration tools for HPC infrastructure management • Portability, reproducibility, and testing approaches in HPC • HPC in the cloud and/or cloud in the HPC • Hardware considerations, including GPUs, accelerators, and interconnects • Security and trust models • Image management, including distribution, archiving, and registries • In-situ visualization and/or analysis • Container-based data management approaches • New container workflows, architectures, and applications, including hybrid traditional/non-traditional jobs, checkpoint/restart, and resource partitioning • New interaction techniques such as web apps (Jupyter, RStudio, etc.) and DevOps WORKSHOP FORMAT CANOPIE-HPC will follow a relatively traditional format based on several other previously successful workshops at SC, consisting of approximately four sessions separated by breaks and lunch. We will have an introduction and welcoming remarks, technical talks, panels, a keynote, and a brief wrap-up discussion. The content of technical sessions will be driven by the curated mix of accepted submissions. In the event of a virtual SC21, CANOPIE-HPC will follow remote guidance from the SC21 organizers, with the goal of simulating an in-person workshop as closely as practical. We enthusiastically welcome original, high-quality submissions within the scope above. These may describe complete studies; work-in-progress research; position papers on controversial, emerging, or hot topics; state of the practice; or any other manuscript the authors believe should be included in the CANOPIE-HPC program. We encourage submissions from academia, industry, government, and/or any other type of institution. Each manuscript will be assessed using peer review by program committee members (or outside reviewers, if needed) on the basis of scientific validity, impact to the field, reproducibility, inclusivity, and opportunity for useful and lively discussion at the workshop. Review will be single-masked; i.e., reviewers will know authors’ identities, but not vice versa. Authors should not anonymize their manuscripts. ISAV 2021: In Situ Infrastructures for Enabling Extreme-scale Analysis and Visualization Held in conjunction with SC21: The International Conference on High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis. First is an I/O cost savings, where data is analyzed/visualized while being generated, without first storing to a file system. Second is the potential for increased accuracy, where fine temporal sampling of transient analysis might expose some complex behavior missed in coarse temporal sampling. Third is the ability to use all available resources, CPUs and accelerators, in the computation of analysis products. The workshop brings together researchers, developers and practitioners from industry, academia, and government laboratories developing, applying, and deploying in situ methods in extreme-scale, high performance computing. The goal is to present research findings, lessons learned, and insights related to developing and applying in situ methods and infrastructure across a range of science and engineering applications in HPC environments; to discuss topics like opportunities presented by new architectures, existing infrastructure needs, requirements, and gaps, and experiences to foster and enable in situ analysis and visualization; to serve as a "center of gravity" for researchers, practitioners, and users/consumers of in situ methods and infrastructure in the HPC space. Participation/Call for Papers We invite two types of submissions to ISAV 2021: (1) short, 4-page (+references) papers that present research results, that identify opportunities or challenges, and that present case studies/best practices for in situ methods/infrastructure in the areas of data management, analysis and visualization; (2) lightning presentation submissions, consisting of a 1- or 2-page (+references) submission, for a brief oral presentation at the workshop. Short papers will appear in the workshop proceedings and authors will be invited to give an oral presentation of 15 to 20 minutes; lightning round submissions invited to present at the workshop will have author names and titles included as part of the proceedings. Submissions of both types are welcome that fall within one or more areas of interest. Areas of interest for ISAV include, but are not limited to: * In situ infrastructures: Novel designs for systems and libraries; Opportunities; Gaps * System resources, hardware, and emerging architectures: Enabling Hardware; Hardware and architectures that provide opportunities for In situ processing, such as burst buffers, staging computations on I/O nodes, sharing cores within a node for both simulation and in situ processing; Efficient use of heterogeneous architectures. * Methods/algorithms: Best practices; Analysis: Feature detection, statistical methods, temporal methods, geometric and topological methods; Visualization: information visualization, scientific visualization, time-varying methods; Data reduction/compression. * Case Studies and Data Sources: Examples/case studies of solving a specific science challenge with in situ methods/infrastructure; In situ methods/systems applied to data from simulations and/or experiments/observations. * Simulation and Workflows: Integration, data modeling, software-engineering; Resilience: error detection, fault recovery; Workflows for supporting complex in situ processing pipelines. * Requirements and Usability: Reproducibility, provenance and metadata; Using in situ to enable rapid and flexible post-processing; Simplified access to extreme heterogeneous resources. Review Process All submissions will undergo a peer-review process consisting of three reviews by experts in the field, and evaluated according to relevance to the workshop theme, technical soundness, creativity, originality, and impact of method/results. Lightning round submissions will be evaluated primarily for relevance to the workshop. Submission Process Authors are invited to submit papers of at most 4 pages in PDF format, excluding references, and lightning presentations of at most 2 pages in PDF format, excluding references. Papers must be submitted in PDF format (readable by Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 and higher) and formatted for 8.5in x 11in (U.S. Letter). This is especially true for the current tier of leading petascale machines and the road to exascale computing as HPC systems continue to scale up in compute node and processor core count. These extreme-scale systems require novel scientific algorithms to hide network and memory latency, have very high computation/communication overlap, have minimal communication, and have no synchronization points. With the advent of Big Data and AI in the past few years the need of such scalable mathematical methods and algorithms able to handle data and compute intensive applications at scale becomes even more important. Scientific algorithms for multi-petaflop and exa-flop systems also need to be fault tolerant and fault resilient, since the probability of faults increases with scale. Resilience at the system software and at the algorithmic level is needed as a crosscutting effort. Finally, with the advent of heterogeneous compute nodes that employ standard processors as well as GPGPUs, scientific algorithms need to match these architectures to extract the most performance. This includes different system-specific levels of parallelism as well as co-scheduling of computation. Key science applications require novel mathematical models and system software that address the scalability and resilience challenges of current- and future-generation extreme-scale HPC systems. We are particularly interested in research that addresses the complexities of real-life applications and/or realistic workloads, the composability challenges arising from the use of bespoke solutions, and the desire to “future-proof” applications through an era of increased heterogeneity and new emerging architectures. The topic of P3 touches on many aspects of HPC software development, and we expect the workshop program to reflect a wide range of experiences and perspectives, including those of compiler, language and runtime experts; performance engineers; and domain scientists. All papers must be written in English and should be between 5 and 10 pages. For all accepted DC papers, the student is required to attend the DC program and give a presentation during the DC. A program committee consisting of experts in various areas related to logic and constraint programming reviews the submissions. Papers are reviewed by at least two, and usually three, referees. The submission package should consist of the research summary in the format mentioned above, a short vita or cover letter of the applicant, a letter of recommendation from applicant's faculty advisor, and one paragraph statement outlining how the school will benefit the applicant. All material is to be submitted electronically, in PDF format on the Easychair system. Controlling materials on such a scale is expected to give rise to integrated nanodevices with simple sensing, actuation, data processing and storage, and communication capabilities, opening the horizon to a variety of ground-breaking applications. By equipping nanodevices with wireless communications capabilities, nanotechnology will facilitate the advance of multiple disruptive applications, such as in-body communication, software-defined metamaterials and metasurfaces, wireless robotic materials, and on-chip communication. Enabling the above applications will require a broad range of expertise, ranging from nanoscale hardware design, resource-constrained computing, and channel modelling to different layers of nanonetworks' protocol development, as well as the expertise along the four detected promising application domains. The 2nd ACM International Workshop on Nanoscale Computing, Communication, and Applications (ACM NanoCoCoA 2021) will be held in conjunction with the 19th ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (SenSys 2021) in Coimbra, Portugal on November 17, 2021. The twofold mission of this workshop is to increase the visibility of nanoscale computing, communication, networking, and supported applications, as well as to bring together researchers from diverse disciplines that can foster and develop this fast developing field. The authors of the workshop papers will be offered a possibility of submitting their extended works at a special section in the IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology (Impact factor: 2.196). S U B M I S S I O N Submitted papers must be unpublished and must not be currently under review for any other publication. Submissions must be either full or work-in-progress (WiP) papers, with at most 6 and 3 single-spaced 8.5” x 11” pages, respectively, and with 9-pt font size in two-column format, including figures and tables. As for references, submissions may include as many pages as needed. All submissions must use the LaTeX (preferred) or Word styles found here. LaTeX submissions should use the acmart.cls template (sigconf option), with the default 9-pt font. This format will be used also for the camera-ready version of the accepted papers. Papers that do not meet the size and formatting requirements will not be reviewed. We require each paper to be in the Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and submitted through the workshop submission system. At least one of the authors of every accepted (full or WiP) paper must register and present the paper at the workshop. The program committee will elect papers for the Best Paper and Best Work-in-Progress Paper Awards.
