**** CALL FOR PAPERS **** The 13th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster, Cloud and Grid Computing (CCGrid 2013) Delft University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands May 13-16, 2013 http://www.pds.ewi.tudelft.nl/ccgrid2013 Rapid advances in architectures, networks, and systems and middleware technologies are leading to new concepts in and platforms for computing, ranging from Clusters and Grids to Clouds and Datacenters. CCGrid is a series of very successful conferences, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Scalable Computing (TCSC) and the ACM, with the overarching goal of bringing together international researchers, developers, and users to provide an international forum to present leading research activities and results on a broad range of topics related to these concepts and platforms, and their applications. The conference features keynotes, technical presentations, workshops, tutorials, and posters, as well as the SCALE challenge featuring live demonstrations. In 2013, CCGrid will come to the Netherlands for the first time, and will be held in Delft, a historical, picturesque city that is less than one hour away from Amsterdam-Schiphol airport. The main conference will be held on May 14-16 (Tuesday to Thursday), with tutorials and affiliated workshops taking place on May 13 (Monday). **** IMPORTANT DATES **** Papers Due: 12 November 2012 Author Notifications: 24 January 2013 Final Papers Due: 22 February 2013 **** TOPICS OF INTEREST **** CCGrid 2013 will have a focus on important and immediate issues that are significantly influencing all aspects of cluster, cloud and grid computing. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Applications and Experiences: Applications to real and complex problems in science, engineering, business, and society; User studies; Experiences with large-scale deployments, systems, or applications * Architecture: System architectures, design and deployment; Power and cooling; Security and reliability; High availability solutions * Autonomic Computing and Cyberinfrastructure: Self-managed behavior, models and technologies; Autonomic paradigms and systems (control-based, bio-inspired, emergent, etc.); Bio-inspired optimizations and computing * Cloud Computing: Cloud architectures; Software tools and techniques for clouds * Multicore and Accelerator-based Computing: Software and application techniques to utilize multicore architectures and accelerators in clusters, grids, and clouds * Performance Modeling and Evaluation: Performance prediction and modeling; Monitoring and evaluation tools; Analysis of system and application performance; Benchmarks and testbeds * Programming Models, Systems, and Fault-Tolerant Computing: Programming models and environments for cluster, cloud, and grid computing; Fault-tolerant systems, programs and algorithms; Systems software to support efficient computing * Scheduling and Resource Management: Techniques to schedule jobs and resources on cluster, cloud, and grid computing platforms; SLA definition and enforcement **** PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES **** Authors are invited to submit papers electronically in PDF format. Submitted manuscripts should be structured as technical papers and may not exceed 8 letter-size (8.5 x 11) pages including figures, tables and references using the IEEE format for conference proceedings. Submissions not conforming to these guidelines may be returned without review. Authors should make sure that their file will print on a printer that uses letter-size (8.5 x 11) paper. The official language of the conference is English. All manuscripts will be reviewed and will be judged on correctness, originality, technical strength, significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to the conference attendees. Submitted papers must represent original unpublished research that is not currently under review for any other conference or journal. Papers not following these guidelines will be rejected without review and further action may be taken, including (but not limited to) notifications sent to the heads of the institutions of the authors and sponsors of the conference. Indeed, they require huge amounts of electrical power consumption, and most of the energy is usually spent to cool the underutilized high-end computing servers. Therefore, the minimization of energy consumption has become a central issue in designing distributed systems. Specially, the relevance of this issue is highly important in the case of Cloud Computing, where the benefit of private companies and public institutions in the field can be highly increased by minimizing the energy usage. Similarly, minimizing energy consumption in high performance computing centers will, in addition to saving power consumption, require less cooling mechanisms. These new challenges require innovative and effective optimization solutions for minimizing power consumption in distributed systems, at the levels of efficient use of computing resources, network, virtualization, etc. The special issue will primarily focus on theoretical and practical novel solutions that advance the research in energy efficient distributed systems. WODET 2013 Fourth Workshop on Determinism and Correctness in Parallel Programming http://wodet.cs.washington.edu Houston, Texas, 17 March 2013 Co-located with ASPLOS 2013 Call for Papers IMPORTANT DATES Submission: Monday, 17 December 2012 Notification: Tuesday, 29 January 2013 Final Version Due: Friday, 1 March 2013 DESCRIPTION There is a growing consensus that parallel programming can benefit from safety properties such as determinism and race freedom, but the debate over which properties to provide, and how to provide them, is far from settled. Many open questions remain: What are the performance and programmability trade-offs for providing a particular safety property? Which properties strike the right balance between eliminating or identifying bugs and restricting the programmer? How can we support code that needs to violate safety properties for performance or expressivity reasons? How can each layer of the system stack contribute to these goals? These questions are increasingly urgent as more and more computing goes parallel, from cell phones to data centers. The Workshop on Determinism and Correctness in Parallel Programming (WoDet) is an across-the-stack forum to discuss the role of a wide range of correctness properties in parallel and concurrent programming. While determinism is an important theme, the scope of the workshop includes other correctness properties for parallel programs and systems. The workshop will be a full day event with invited talks and technical sessions for short peer-reviewed papers discussing ideas, positions, or preliminary research results. SCOPE In addition to answers to the questions above, topics of interest include: * Language support for disciplined parallel programming * Architecture, operating system, runtime system and compiler support for parallel program correctness * Concurrency debugging techniques * New properties of parallel programs * Limit studies and empirical studies of the cost of safety properties * Studies of the applicability of correctness properties in parallel programs and algorithms * Concurrency bug avoidance techniques * Real-world experience with safe parallel programming models, systems, or tools SUBMISSION Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished work that exposes a new problem, advocates a specific solution, or reports on actual experience. Papers should be submitted using the standard two-column ACM SIG proceedings or SIG alternate template, and are limited to 6 pages (including figures, tables and references). Final papers will be made available to participants electronically at the meeting, but to facilitate resubmission to more formal venues, no archival proceedings will be published, and papers will not be sent to the ACM Digital Library. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 2013 IEEE Award for Excellence in Scalable Computing A Call for Nominations ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The IEEE Award for Excellence in Scalable Computing is awarded for significant and sustained contributions to the scalable computing community through the IEEE Technical Committee on Scalable Computing (TCSC), coupled with an outstanding record of high quality and high impact research. The award consists of a plaque and an honorarium of $1000. During 2008-2011, this honour was presented as the IEEE Medal of Excellence. The past recipients of this IEEE award are: Professor Jack Dongarra (University of Tennessee, USA) in 2008, Professor Rajkumar Buyya (University of Melbourne, Australia) in 2009, Professor William Gropp (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA) in 2010, Professor Albert Zomaya (University of Sydney, Australia) in 2011, and Professor David Abramson (Monash University, Australia) in 2012. This trend is made possible by System-on-Chip (SoC) and Heterogeneous Architectures that combine wider power/performance scaling, combinations of high performance and ultra-low power general-purpose cores along with a wide spectrum of domain-specific accelerators or Intellectual Property (IP) blocks. With the recent introduction of general-purpose compute cores such as Intel(r) Core(tm) i7 and Atom(tm) processors, these heterogeneous platforms have the potential to run a much broader range of applications than ever before. The goal of this workshop is to bring together academic researchers and industry practitioners to discuss future SoC and Heterogeneous architectures, Accelerators and Workloads. The research challenges in SoC/Heterogeneous platforms are multi-fold: (a) providing rich functionality and wider power/performance range (b) attempting to cover a broad range of applications that can be migrated from mainstream platforms to SoCs and Heterogeneous devices, (c) enabling a modular architecture and design environment that improves time-to-market and (d) providing a rich software programming environment that eases the challenge of developing applications on a heterogeneous architecture consisting of general-purpose cores as well as specialized accelerators. ====================================================================== CALL FOR PAPERS Springer Cluster Computing The Journal of Networks, Software Tools and Applications Editor-in-Chief: Salim Hariri Special Issue on Unconventional Cluster Architectures and Applications Guest Editors: Federico Silla, Holger Frï¿½ning ====================================================================== This CLUSTER COMPUTING JOURNAL special issue gears to gather recent work on unconventional cluster architectures and applications, which potentially have a big impact on defining future cluster architectures. This includes any cluster architecture that is not based on the usual commodity components and therefore makes use of some special hard- or software elements, or that is used for very special and unconventional applications. Examples include GPUs, MICs (Many Integrated Core), FLASH and FPGAs on the hardware side, and run-time management, virtualization, in-memory storage and device-to-device communication on the software side. We are in particular encouraging work on disruptive approaches, which may show inferior performance today but can already point out their full performance potential. The broad scope of the special issue facilitates submissions on unconventional uses of hardware or software, gearing to gather ideas that are coming to life now and not limiting them except for their context: clusters. We are seeking new proposals presented from a holistic perspective. In this regard, one of the aims of the special issue is anticipating the evolution of clusters, instead of just presenting new work carried out in the traditional cluster areas usually addressed in other journals and conferences. TOPICS OF INTEREST Topics of interest include any unconventional cluster architecture or application. Call for DEBS 2013 Grand Challenge Solutions DEBS 2013: 7th ACM International Conference on Distributed Event-Based Systems Arlington, Texas, USA, June 29 - July 3, 2013 http://www.orgs.ttu.edu/debs2013/ The ACM International Conference on Distributed Event-Based Systems (DEBS) 2013 Grand Challenge is the third in a series of challenges which seek to provide a common ground and evaluation criteria for a competition aimed at both research and industrial event-based systems. The goal of the Grand Challenge competition is to implement a solution to a problem provided by the Grand Challenge organizers. The DEBS Grand Challenge series provides problems which are relevant to the industry at large. DEBS Grand Challenge problems allow for evaluation of event based systems using real-life data and queries. All DEBS 2013 Grand Challenge submissions must be composed of two parts: (1) a 6 page paper, in ACM SIG proceedings format, outlining the solution, highlighting its innovative aspects and presenting the evaluation and (2) a demonstration of the system - either in the form of a video or a screencast. All submissions are subject to a peer review process. Authors of all accepted submissions will be invited to present their systems during the DEBS 2013 Conference. Upon the explicit consent from the challenge participants, authors solutions will be included in the global ranking with the winner of the Grand Challenge being announced and awarded during the conference banquet. The global ranking is based on the peer review process scores and the performance of the solution. The performance is based on the throughput and latency of the system under the assumption of result correctness. Problem Description The DEBS 2013 Grand Challenge problem focuses on the real-time analytics of a soccer game. With this year's challenge, we seek to demonstrate the applicability of event-based systems to perform real-time tracking of sport events and to provide real-time complex analytics over high velocity sensor data. The data for the DEBS 2013 Grand Challenge originates from a number of wireless sensors embedded in the shoes and a ball used during a soccer match and spans the whole duration of the game. The real-time analytics includes the continuous computation of statistics of relevance to spectators (ball possession, shots on goal) as well as trainers and team managers (team members' running analysis). PMAM 2013 Call For Papers The 2013 International Workshop on Programming Models and Applications for Multicores and Manycores will be co-located with the PPoPP 2013 conference in February 23-27, 2013, Shenzhen, China. Rapid advancements in multicore and chip-level multi-threading technologies open new challenges and make multicore systems a part of the computing landscape. From high-end servers to mobile phones, multicores and manycores are steadily entering every single aspect of the information technology. However most programmers are trained in sequential programming, yet most existing parallel programming models are prone to errors such as data race and deadlock. Therefore to fully utilise multicore and manycore hardware, parallel programming models that allow easy transition of sequential programs to parallel programs with good performance and enable development of error-free codes are urgently needed. This workshop is dedicated primarily to gather researchers and practitioners addressing the main challenges and share experiences in the emerging multicore and manycore software engineering and distributed programming paradigm. This workshop aims to provide a discussion forum for people interested in programming environments, models, tools and applications specifically designed for parallel multicore and manycore hardware environments.
