Dear Colleagues, scalable parallel applications are an enabler of research and development in science and industry. For example, they allow us to predict the impacts of diseases, weather, or earthquakes on society, they enable the discovery of products such as drugs or constructions like a fusion reactor. The fundamental methods and algorithms evolve with the demand in the applications and the capabilities of hardware and software environments to execute them. On the horizon are revolutionary changes to the landscape of applications -- machine learning and quantum computing are being integrated into traditional HPC and large-scale workflows span across a single data center to the cloud, fog, and edge. At the same time, numerical algorithms, e.g., for particle and mesh-based simulations are evolving. This special issue aims to provide an overview of the research frontiers of parallel algorithms and their application in science and industry. We invite you to submit high-quality papers to this Special Issue “High-Performance Computing Algorithms and their Applications” covering the whole spectrum of application domains: Astronomy, Biosciences, Digital humanities, Geoinformatics, ... A submitted manuscript should describe the application domain, the principles of the algorithms that address the problem, and state-of-the-art on the field. Opportunity for lightning talks at UrgentHPC SC20 workshop

Are you or your project undertaking work in the use of HPC to run urgent workloads in responding to disasters? If so then there is the opportunity to present a short, 5 minute, lightning talk at the Second international workshop on HPC for Urgent Decision making (UrgentHPC). This will run in conjunction with SC20: the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis, on Friday the 13th of November between 14:30 and 18:30 (all times are Eastern Times.) If this is something that you would be interested in doing then please email us at urgenthpc-workshop(a)mlist.is.ed.ac.uk by Monday 5th of October with a short one or two paragraph description of your proposed lightening talk. Workshop Scope ========== Responding to disasters such as COVID-19, wildfires, hurricanes, extreme flooding, earthquakes, tsunamis, and accidents; technological advances are creating exciting new opportunities that have the potential to move HPC well beyond traditional computational workloads. Whilst HPC has a long history of simulating disasters, what’s missing to support emergency, urgent, decision making is fast, real-time acquisition of data and the ability to guarantee time constraints. Our ability to capture data continues to grow very significantly, and combining high velocity data and live analytics with HPC models can aid in urgently responding to real-world problems, ultimately saving lives and reducing economic loss. It’s not just responding to disasters, but also making urgent decisions addressing more general issues such as human health emergencies and global diseases. The challenges here are significant, but if HPC can be proven as a tool in responding to these real-world issues, the impact for our community is huge. Leveraging HPC for urgent decision making requires expertise in a wide range of areas, from dealing with real-time data, to experience in generating results within a specific time frame (real-time constraints), and generating visualisations enabling front-line decision makers to make correct choices first time, every time. It isn’t just technical challenges, but also policy issues that also need to be considered such as utilising our HPC machines in a more interactive manner to enable the urgent exploration of numerous disaster responses. This workshop will bring together stakeholders, researchers and practitioners from across the HPC community to identify and tackle issues involved in using HPC for urgent decision making. Success stories, case-studies and challenges will be shared, with the goal of further building up a community around leveraging HPC as an important tool in urgently responding to disasters and societal challenges. Workshop topics ========== * Use of HPC and big-data for tackling COVID-19 * Example use-cases and case-studies that use HPC for urgent decision making * Techniques for integrating HPC workflows with real-time data * Approaches to verify and validate unreliable real-time data, for instance from sensors, IoT and satellites * System design for data reduction and pre-processing at source, for instance using edge computing and heterogeneous resources such as FPGAs * The use of data formats and conversion techniques to support the handling of data from numerous and diverse sources * Algorithmic techniques to guarantee result generation in specific time frames, such as result refinement which generates more accurate results as time progresses * Studies of leveraging HPC for workloads with real-time time constraints * Changes to existing HPC technologies and policies that are required to support using HPC interactively * The ability for HPC codes to adapt their resource requirements dynamically, for instance via elastic compute * Visualisation and presentation techniques to support rapid and accurate urgent decision making by the end user * Reduction and feature extraction of results to highlight critical issues of interest * Complimenting results with provenance data for additional context and certainty * Data analysis techniques for making urgent decisions in response to disasters The University of Edinburgh is a charitable body, registered in Scotland, with registration number SC005336.

Although medical instruments have benefited a great deal from the technological advances of the couple of decades, the impact of integrating IT advancements in addressing critical problems in biomedical research remains limited and the process of penetrating IT tools in the medical profession continues to be a very challenging problem. Due to the computational intensive problems in life sciences, the marriage between the Biomedical Informatics domain and high performance computing is critical to the advancement of Biosciences. In addition, the problems in this domain tend to be highly parallelizable and deal with large datasets. The Bioinformatics domain is rich in applications that require extracting useful information from very large and continuously growing sequence of databases. Most methods used for analyzing sequences are computationally intensive, providing motivation for the use of powerful computational systems with high throughput. Moreover, high-throughput wet lab platforms are producing a huge amount of experimental "omics" data. The increasing availability of omics data poses new challenges to bioinformatics applications that need to face in a semi-automatic way an overwhelming availability of raw data. The workshop attempts to attract innovative ways of how to extract knowledge from such massive raw via Bioinformatics and Biomedical Informatics research, particularly in taking advantage of the new advancements in HPC systems. The focus of data analysis and data mining tools in biomedical research highlights the current state of research in the key biomedical research areas such as bioinformatics, medical informatics and biomedical imaging. Addressing performance concerns in managing and accessing medical data, while facilitating the ability to integrate and correlate different biomedical databases remains an outstanding problem in biomedical research. The amount of available biomedical data continues to grow in an exponential rate; however, the impact of utilizing such resources remains minimal. The development of innovative tools in HPC environments to integrate, analyze and mine such data sources is a key step towards achieving large impact levels. Call for Abstract contribution Submission deadline: 30th of October 2020 Workshop on Multi-scale, Multi-physics and Coupled Problems on Highly Parallel Systems (MMCP) at HPC Asia 2021, January 20-22, Jeju, South Korea This workshop will provide a platform for presentations and discussions on advances in numerical simulation for complex multi-scale, multi-physics and coupled problems. The goal of the workshop is to gather researchers (computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, physicists, chemists, biologists, material sciences etc.) working on different disciplines but all facing challenges in multi-scale and multi-physics as well as coupled simulations on HPC systems. This workshop is the second event in the series; the first was held at HPCAsia 2020, in Fukuoka, Japan. The main focus will be set on computational issues regarding performance and suitability for high-performance computing. Furthermore, the underlying strategies to enable these simulations will be highlighted. Keeping these aims in mind, contributions from all aspects of engineering applications will be considered. Poster paper: Initial work with relevant ideas, open to discussion. These papers are assigned to a 4-page limit. Company paper: Companies' papers that show practical experience, R & D, tools, etc., focused on some topics of the conference. These papers are assigned to a 4-page limit. Submitted papers must comply with the format of Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing Series (see Instructions for Authors at Springer Website), be written in English, must not have been published before, not be under review for any other conference or publication and not include any information leading to the authors’ identification. Therefore, the authors’ names, affiliations and bibliographic references should not be included in the version for evaluation by the Program Committee. This information should only be included in the camera-ready version, saved in Word or Latex format and also in PDF format. These files must be accompanied by the Consent to Publish form filled out, in a ZIP file, and uploaded at the conference management system. All papers will be subjected to a “double-blind review” by at least two members of the Program Committee. Based on Program Committee evaluation, a paper can be rejected or accepted by the Conference Chairs. In the later case, it can be accepted as the type originally submitted or as another type. Thus, full papers can be accepted as short papers or poster papers only. Similarly, short papers can be accepted as poster papers only. Poster papers and Company papers are not published in the Conference Proceedings, being only presented and discussed. The authors of accepted poster papers should build and print a poster to be exhibited during the Conference. This poster must follow an A1 or A2 vertical format. The Conference includes Work Sessions where these posters are presented and orally discussed, with a 7 minute limit per poster. The authors of accepted Full papers will have 15 minutes to present their work in a Conference Work Session; approximately 5 minutes of discussion will follow each presentation. The authors of accepted Short papers and Company papers will have 11 minutes to present their work in a Conference Work Session; approximately 4 minutes of discussion will follow each presentation. Publication and Indexing To ensure that a full paper or short paper is published, poster paper or company paper is published, at least one of the authors must be fully registered by the 2nd of January 2021, and the paper must comply with the suggested layout and page-limit. Submissions could be for full papers, short papers, poster papers, or posters. *SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES* On the road to exascale, multi-core processors and many-core accelerators/coprocessors are increasingly becoming key-building blocks of many computing platforms including laptops, high performance workstations, clusters, grids, and clouds. On the other hand, plenty of hard problems in a wide range of areas including engineering design, telecommunications, logistics and transportation, biology, energy, etc., are often modeled and tackled using optimization approaches. These approaches include greedy algorithms, exact methods (dynamic programming, Branch-and-X, constraint programming, A*, etc.) and meta-heuristics (evolutionary algorithms, particle swarm, ant or bee colonies, simulated annealing, Tabu search, etc.). In many research works, optimization techniques are used to address high performance computing (HPC) issues including HPC hardware design, compiling, scheduling, auto-tuning, etc. On the other hand, optimization problems become increasingly large and complex, forcing the use of parallel computing for their efficient and effective resolution. The design and implementation of parallel optimization methods raise several issues such as load balancing, data locality and placement, fault tolerance, scalability, thread divergence, etc. This workshop seeks to provide an opportunity for the researchers to present their original contributions on the joint use of advanced (discrete or continuous, single or multi-objective, static or dynamic, deterministic or stochastic, hybrid) optimization methods and distributed and/or parallel multi/many-core computing, and any related issues. The POMCO Workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following: - Parallel models (island, master-worker, multi-start, etc.) for optimization methods revisited for multi-core and/or many-core (MMC) environments. - Parallelization techniques and advanced data structures for exact (e.g. tree-based) optimization methods. - Parallel mechanisms for hybridization of optimization algorithms on MMC environments. - Parallel strategies for handling uncertainty, robustness and dynamic nature of optimization methods. - Parallel/distributed large-scale global optimization (e.g. parallel/distributed cooperative coevolution-based algorithms). - Parallel/distributed multi- and many-objective algorithms (non dominance-based, decomposition-based, etc.). Implementation issues of parallel optimization methods on MMC workstations, MMC clusters, MMC grids/clouds, etc. - Parallel/distributed implementation using productivity-aware programming languages (Chapel, Python, Julia, etc.). - Software frameworks for the design and implementation of parallel and/or distributed MMC optimization algorithms. - Computational/theoretical studies reporting results on solving big optimization problems using MMC computing. Energy-aware optimization for/with MMC parallel and/or distributed optimization methods. - Optimization techniques for scheduling, compiling, auto-tuning for MMC clusters, MMC grids/clouds, etc. *INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER SUBMISSION* You are invited to submit original and unpublished research works on above and any other related topics. Submitted papers must not have been published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere until it appears in HPCS proceedings, in the case of acceptance, or notified otherwise. Submission can be for: - Regular papers, please submit a PDF copy of your full manuscript, not to exceed 8 double-column formatted pages per template, and include up to 6 keywords and an abstract of no more than 400 words. Additional pages will be charged additional fee. Submission should include a cover page with authors' names, affiliation addresses, fax numbers, phone numbers, and all authors' email addresses. ICCD encompasses a wide range of topics in the research, design, and implementation of computer systems and their components. Its multi-disciplinary emphasis provides an ideal environment for developers and researchers to discuss practical and theoretical work covering system and computer architecture, test, verification and security, design tools and methodologies, circuit design, and technology. The conference is open to all for free but requires a no-cost registration up to October 16, 2020. These problems are often tackled using optimization approaches including greedy algorithms, exact methods (dynamic programming, Branch-and-X, constraint programming, A∗, etc.) and metaheuristics (evolutionary algorithms, particle swarm, ant or bee colonies, simulated annealing, Tabu search, etc.). Solving efficiently and effectively large and complex problems requires the joint use of these approaches and massively parallel heterogeneous computing. In addition, for many real-world problems (e.g. in engineering design) the evaluation of the objective function(s) often consist(s) of the execution of an expensive simulation as a black-box complex system. This is for instance typically the case in aerodynamics where a CFD-based simulation may require several hours. Optimization algorithms, even if combined with parallel computing, fail to solve these simulation-based optimization problems. A typical approach to deal with the computational burden is to use (instead of exact values) cheaper data-driven approximations of the objective function(s) so-called surrogates or meta-models. A wide range of surrogates was applied during the last decade including: classical regression models such as polynomial regression or response surface methodology, support vector machines, artificial neural networks (ANN), radial basis functions, and kriging or Gaussian process. ANN is probably the most prevalent of them with the recent “explosion” of the deep learning popularized thanks to GPGPUs. The PaCOS Workshop topics include the following: The PaCOS workshop seeks to provide an opportunity for researchers to present their original contributions on the joint use of advanced single- or multi-objective optimization methods, simulation and/or its data-driven approximation, and distributed and/or parallel multi/many-core computing, and any related issues.
