During the symposium, scientists and engineers in both academia and industry are invited to present their work on concurrent and parallel systems (multicore, multithreaded, heterogeneous, clustered systems, distributed systems, grids, clouds, and large scale machines). The number of objects connected to the Internet is set to reach 30.9 billion by 2025. Cisco estimates the number will be close to 25 billion objects by 2025. Others believe the actual number will be even higher with the assumption that any object with a simple micro controller and on-off switch will be connected to the Internet in the near feature. The scale of the IoT is set to have a major economic, social and environmental impacts; the intersection of which forms the future sustainable growth. The IEEE Internet of Things: Systems, Management and Security (IoTSMS 2022) aims at soliciting original ideas on the broad area of IoT including challenges and opportunities, concepts and applications and future trends. This model decouples individual hardware resources, including tightly coupled ones such as processors and memory, and enables the composition of logical compute platforms with flexible and dynamic hardware configurations. The concept of disaggregation is driven by various recent trends in computation. From an application perspective, the increasing importance of data analytics and machine learning workloads in HPC centers brings unprecedented need for memory capacity, which is in stark contrast with the growing imbalance in the peak compute-to-memory capacity ratio of traditional system board based server platforms where memory modules are co-located with processors. At the hardware front, the proliferation of heterogeneous, special purpose computing elements promotes the need for configurable compute platforms, while at the same time, the increasing maturity of optical interconnects elevates the prospects of better distance independence in networking infrastructure. The workshop intends to explore various aspects of resource disgregation, composability and their implications for high performance computing, both in dedicated HPC centers as well as in cloud environments. First is an I/O cost savings, where data is analyzed/visualized while being generated, without first storing to a file system. Second is the potential for increased accuracy, where fine temporal sampling of transient analysis might expose some complex behavior missed in coarse temporal sampling. Third is the ability to use all available resources, CPUs and accelerators, in the computation of analysis products. The workshop brings together researchers, developers and practitioners from industry, academia, and government laboratories developing, applying, and deploying in situ methods in extreme-scale, high performance computing. The goal is to present research findings, lessons learned, and insights related to developing and applying in situ methods and infrastructure across a range of science and engineering applications in HPC environments; to discuss topics like opportunities presented by new architectures, existing infrastructure needs, requirements, and gaps, and experiences to foster and enable in situ analysis and visualization; to serve as a "center of gravity" for researchers, practitioners, and users/consumers of in situ methods and infrastructure in the HPC space. Participation/Call for Papers We invite two types of submissions to ISAV 2022: (1) short, 5-page (+references) papers that present research results, that identify opportunities or challenges, and that present case studies/best practices for in situ methods/infrastructure in the areas of data management, analysis and visualization; (2) lightning presentation submissions, consisting of a 1- or 2-page (+references) submission, for a brief oral presentation at the workshop. Short papers will appear in the workshop proceedings and authors will be invited to give an oral presentation of 15 to 20 minutes; lightning round submissions invited to present at the workshop will have author names and titles included as part of the proceedings. Submissions of both types are welcome that fall within one or more areas of interest. Areas of interest for ISAV include, but are not limited to: * In situ infrastructures: Novel designs for systems and libraries; Opportunities; Gaps * System resources, hardware, and emerging architectures: Elasticity, Cloud-, HPC-, and/or Edge-based approaches; Enabling Hardware; Hardware and architectures that provide opportunities for In situ processing, such as burst buffers, staging computations on I/O nodes, sharing cores within a node for both simulation and in situ processing; Efficient use of heterogeneous architectures. * Methods/algorithms: Best practices; Analysis: AI/ML, feature detection, statistical methods, temporal methods, geometric and topological methods; Visualization: information visualization, scientific visualization, time-varying methods; Data reduction/compression. * Case Studies and Data Sources: Examples/case studies of solving a specific science challenge with in situ methods/infrastructure; In situ methods/systems applied to data from simulations and/or experiments/observations. * Simulation and Workflows: Integration, data modeling, software-engineering; Resilience: error detection, fault recovery; Workflows for supporting complex in situ processing pipelines. * Requirements and Usability: Reproducibility, provenance and metadata; Using in situ to enable rapid and flexible post-processing; Simplified access to extreme heterogeneous resources. For the submissions we are not only looking for success stories, but are also particularly interested in those experiments that started with a certain goal or idea in mind, but later were shattered by reality or insufficient hardware/software. Review Process All submissions will undergo a peer-review process consisting of three reviews by experts in the field, and evaluated according to relevance to the workshop theme, technical soundness, creativity, originality, and impact of method/results. Lightning round submissions will be evaluated primarily for relevance to the workshop. Submission Process Authors are invited to submit papers of at most 5 pages in PDF format, excluding references, and lightning presentations of at most 2 pages in PDF format, excluding references. Optimizing for various factors such as cost, efficiency and performance under power and energy constraints requires coordination across the infrastructure (e.g., mechanical and electrical systems), the HPC system (hardware and software), and end-user applications. There are early adopters and innovators in operational practices and technologies that are geared towards improving energy and power management capabilities. This workshop will explore these operational and technological innovations that span HPC computational systems as well as building infrastructure. The purpose of this workshop is to allow for the publication of practices, policies, procedures, and technologies in formal peer-reviewed papers so the broader community can benefit from these experiences. It will expose use cases, lessons learned, and best practices in design, commissioning, and operations. However, trends towards increasingly heterogeneous compute nodes, networks with powerful offloading capabilities, alternative programming models, and non-traditional workloads present new challenges and opportunities for innovation. The aim of this workshop is to bring together developers and researchers to present and discuss algorithms, protocols, operations, and concepts in message passing programming models that address these challenges and opportunities, with a focus on MPI in particular. The theme of this year's workshop is interoperability and support for heterogeneity in hardware and software. However, submissions targeting any relevant topic are welcomed. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): -- Design and development of scalable message passing collective operations. -- Communication and architecture topology mapping interfaces and algorithms. -- Innovative algorithms for scheduling/routing to avoid network congestion. -- Integrated use of structured data layout descriptors. -- One-sided communication models and RDMA-based MPI. -- Support for heterogeneous compute devices and heterogeneous memory systems. -- MPI multi-threading and threading requirements from OSes. -- Interoperability of message passing and other programming models, such as PGAS. -- Integration of task-parallel models into message passing models. -- Fault tolerance in MPI. -- Utilization of `smart' or programmable offloading technologies. -- MPI I/O. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paper submission and publication ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The workshop welcomes both research and position papers. Research papers should be no more than 10 single-spaced pages (including figures, tables, and references) using at 10-point font on 8.5x11 inch pages (US Letter).
