By “digital city” we are referring to a connected community that combines a communication infrastructure, virtual environments and innovative services to meet the needs of good governance and sustainable national development. EGPGV Call For Papers (early submission), due December 6, 2017 Note: This year, the EuroGraphics Symposium on Parallel Graphics and Visualization (EGPGV) will have two review deadlines: early submission and regular submission. An FAQ about early submissions is at the bottom of this email. Webpage: http://egpgv.cs.uoregon.edu == About EGPGV == The importance of parallel computing is increasing rapidly with the ubiquitous availability of multi-core CPUs, GPUs, and cluster systems. Computationally demanding and data-intensive applications in graphics and visualization are strongly affected by this trend and require novel, efficient parallel solutions. The aim of this symposium is to foster the exchange of experiences and knowledge exploiting and defining new trends in parallel graphics and visualization. The proceedings of the EuroGraphics Symposium on Parallel Graphics and Visualization (EGPGV) will be published in the Eurographics Proceedings Series and in the Eurographics Digital Library. Best papers from the EGPGV symposium will be invited to submit an extended journal version to IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. EGPGV18 will be colocated with EuroVis2018, held the week of June 4-8 2018, in Brno, Czech Republic. The symposium seeks papers on graphics and visualization that involve any type of parallel computing. Papers on techniques, data structures, algorithms, systems, and applications are welcomed. Parallel computing is broadly defined, including high-performance computing and cloud environments, (multi-) GPU computing and heterogeneous, hybrid architectures, and shared and/or distributed memory architectures. Further, papers focused on processing very large data sets (either for visualization or graphics) are welcomed, even if they do not have a particular focus on parallelism. Typical symposium topics include: - Computationally and data intensive rendering - Scientific visualization (e.g., volume rendering, flow, and tensor visualization) - Information visualization and visual analytics - In situ analytics and in situ visualization - Out-of-core processing of large data sets for visualization or graphics - Simulations for virtual environments (physics-based animation, collision detection, acoustics) - Mesh processing, level-of-detail, and geometric methods - Visual computing (image- and video-based rendering, image processing and exploitation, segmentation) - Scheduling, memory management, and data coherence - Parallelization approaches and algorithms, such as MapReduce - Database-related methods, algorithms or approaches, and query-based visualization - Advanced hardware for data handling or visualization - Large and high resolution displays, virtual environments - Scientific, engineering, and industrial applications - Data analytics on large scientific data sets In general, appropriate topics for the symposium fall into one of four categories: (1) parallel graphics, (2) rendering of very large data sets, (3) parallel visualization and analytics, and (4) processing of large data sets for visualization or analytics. == Submission details == We will once again have submission options for full papers (8 to 10 pages in the Eurographics format) and short papers (up to 4 pages). The EGPGV webpage will be updated soon with more details on submission instructions. Early submission deadline: December 6, 2017 Notification for early submission: January 26, 2018 == FAQ on early submission == Q: What happens if my paper is accepted in the early submission review cycle? A: Your paper will have the exact same status as any paper accepted during the regular submission deadline. It will appear in the proceedings and you will present your paper at EGPGV18. Further, you may place your paper on your website and advertise it as a paper that will appear at EGPGV18. Q: What happens if my paper is not accepted in the early submission review cycle? A: Papers not accepted during the early submission review cycle may be resubmitted as new during the regular review cycles. Authors can indicate to the Chairs whether they would like the same reviewers (effectively treating the initial review as a revision). Q: If I do not submit to the early submission deadline, then can I still submit to the regular submission deadline? A: You can absolutely submit to only the regular submission deadline. Q: What is the timeline for the regular submission deadline? A: We are still in discussions with EuroGraphics with respect to camera-ready deadlines. Traditionally, EGPGV has a submission deadline of late February and a notification of early April. We expect the timeline for the regular submissions to match this traditional schedule.

We will have a BoF on Charm++ and AMPI (Agenda at https://charm.cs.illinois.edu/CharmBoF) on Thursday 12:15 to 1:15 in room 301-302-303. We will present updates to the Charm++ system, including many features and improvements, along with short presentations from application developers, and an open discussion. I’d especially urge you to send relevant people (from your organization or elsewhere), and/or come yourself to *the Charm++ tutorial*. Sunday morning is not the best spot, but it will be useful and doesn’t cost that much. A PPL startup, Charmworks Inc., will exhibit in Booth 2233. Charmworks is commercially developing, licensing, and supporting Charm++. Of course, we continue to distribute Charm++ freely from the University for non-commercial purposes. Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining Information Sciences, Elsevier The sheer volume of new data, which is being generated at an increasingly fast pace, has already produced an anticipated data deluge that is difficult to challenge. We are in the presence of an overwhelming vast quantity of data, owing to how easy is to produce or derive digital data. Even the storage of this massive amount of data is becoming a highly demanding task, outpacing the current development of hardware and software infrastructure. Nonetheless, this effort must be undertaken now for the preservation, organization and long-term maintenance of these precious data. However, the collected data is useless without our ability fully understand and make use of it. Therefore, we need new algorithms to address this challenge. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. This Special Issue takes into account the increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel and distributed data mining algorithms. Parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators available on parallel computers. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. Moreover, increasingly the data is spread among different geographically distributed sites. Centralized processing of this data is very inefficient and expensive. In some cases, it may even be impractical and subject to security risks. Therefore, processing the data minimizing the amount of data being exchanged whilst guaranteeing at the same time correctness and efficiency is an extremely important challenge. Distributed data mining performs data analysis and mining in a fundamentally distributed manner paying careful attention to resource constraints, in particular bandwidth limitation, privacy concerns and computing power. The focus of this Special Issue is on all forms of advances in high-performance and distributed data mining algorithms and applications. The topics relevant to the Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following. This year, special focus will be on the challenging issues related to all the opportunities of computing, sensing and communication in the era of the integration of Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, and Big Data. The Workshops Committee of SMARTCOMP 2018 invites proposals for half or full day workshops affiliated with the conference, on topics of interest to SMARTCOMP 2018 attendees. New applications, such as virtual reality and smart building control, have emerged due to the large number of resources and services brought by cloud computing. However, the delay-sensitive applications face the problem of large latency, especially when several smart devices and objects are getting involved in human’s life such as the case of smart cities or Internet of Things. Therefore, cloud computing is unable to meet the requirements of low latency, location awareness, and mobility support. To solve this problem, researchers have introduced a trusted and dependable solution through the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC) to put the services and resources of the cloud closer to users, which facilitates the leveraging of available services and resources in the edge networks. By this, we are moving from the core (cloud data centers) to the edge of the network closer to the users. FMEC dependability is based on providing user centric service. The purpose of Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing is to run the heavy real-time applications at the network edge directly using the billions of connected mobile devices. Several features enable the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing to be a perfect paradigm to the aforementioned purpose, which are the dense geographical deployment of servers, supporting mobility and the closeness to users. As in every new technology, some challenges face the vision of the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing, which are the administrative policies and security concerns (i.e. secure data storage, secure computation, network security, data privacy, usage privacy, location privacy, etc). FMEC 2018 conference aims to investigate the opportunities and requirements for Mobile Edge Computing dominance. In addition, it seeks for novel contributions that help mitigating Mobile Edge Computing challenges. Conventional control and management platforms are facing considerable challenges regarding flexibility, dependability and security that next generation systems will require. The cloud computing paradigm has gone part of the way towards alleviating some of the problems associated with resource allocation, utilization and managements (e.g., via elasticity). However, many of the elements of a well-designed cloud environment remain “stiff” and hard to modify and adapt in an integrated fashion. This includes underlying networking topologies, many aspects of the user control over IaaS, PaaS or SaaS layers when such is needed, construction of XaaS services, provenance and meta-data collection, and so on. In many situations the problem may be because service abstraction is inadequate. Software Defined Systems (SDS) are systems that have added software components which help abstract actual IT equipment and other layers. One classical example, of course, are hypervisors. Such separation provides a great opportunity for system administrators to more easily construct and managing their systems through flexible software layers. Software Defined Systems include Software Defined Networking (SDN), Software Defined Storage, Software Defined Servers (Virtualization), Software Defined Datacenters (SDD), Software Defined Security (SDSec), and ultimately Software Defined Clouds (SDCloud) to name a few possibilities. Individual solutions and seamless integration of these abstractions remains in many respects a challenge. After the high success of the previous editions (SDS'2014, SDS'2015, SDS'2016 and SDS'2017), The fifth International conference on Software Defined Systems 2018 (SDS'2018) will continue to be a forum for scientists, researchers, students, and practitioners to present their latest research results, ideas, and developments in the area of software defined systems – both components and their integration - and by implication advancement of next generation clouds.
