Except for low power hardware design, software-based power management techniques are equally critical for solving the power problem of computer systems. As the basic of power management related research, power measurement and profiling aim to measure or estimate the power dissipation of different levels. These techniques are globally used in many areas. For example, hardware performance counter based power profiling can be used to supply on-line power information for power-aware scheduling algorithms. Furthermore, the estimated block-level or instruction-level power information can be used to analyze software power behaviors. Moreover, direct power measurement with hardware devices is also critical for validating the effectiveness of power-aware strategies. Recent work is more concentrated on estimating the power of different levels with software power models. In addition, designing power-aware strategies based on the estimated on-line power information requires to do more deeply research. This workshop aims to bring together researchers from different domains that have faced power measurement and profiling issues to share their successes as well as the challenges they face. This workshop will be of interest to researchers, graduate students, and practitioners in several areas such as operating systems, computer architecture, distributed systems, mobile computing, high performance computing, and social science. --------------------------- Topics of interest --------------------------- The workshop seeks papers that address theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress in the area of power measurement and profiling in computer systems. Please include this announcement in your forum: IEEE Cluster 2013 announces call for keynote speakers, revised deadlines Hosted by Indiana University’s Pervasive Technology Institute, IEEE Cluster 2013 will take place September 23-27, 2013, at the Hilton Hotel in Indianapolis. The committee welcomes keynote speaker suggestions for this year’s conference. Please send ideas to Craig Stewart, executive director of Indiana University’s Pervasive Technology Institute, associate dean of Research Technologies and general chair of the conference: stewart(a)iu.edu<mailto:[email protected]> The Cluster 2013 conference is also continuing to accept proposals for tutorials, technical papers, posters, panels and visualizations. All submissions are due May 18, 2013. (A one-week extension until May 25 will automatically be granted upon submission of an abstract by May 18.) Proposal submission and review will be handled via EasyChair at http://bit.ly/YD8ivr. Conference proceedings will be published in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. Conference organizers are particularly interested in content related to: * Current and future directions in cluster technology * Clusters driving innovation in industrial and academic research * Clusters in education and outreach (technical papers describing formal education and outreach programs, as well as position papers about how the community can help educate and train a twenty-first century workforce) * Clusters and clouds in cyberinfrastructure strategy * Clusters in distributed visualization Here is the link to IEEE proceedings templates: http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html To learn more about Cluster 2013, visit the conference website at http://pti.iu.edu/ieeecluster-2013. Details on the call for participation are available below. Submissions are sought in the following tracks: * Cluster Management. This track will encompass all facets of cluster technology and management, highlighting new technologies, trends and best practices in cluster architecture, cluster management and applications that run on clusters. Please consider cluster technology and management within the broader context of clouds and cyberinfrastructure. (Submission type: Paper) * Cluster Technology. Submissions should present technology developments and capabilities that enable increased performance, capability, productivity and/or reliability of cluster resources. Please describe the technology in detail, discuss achieved or potential impact and articulate future plans. (Submission type: Paper) * Clusters, Interconnects and Next Generation Networks. This track will focus on the impact of new generation networking technology within the cluster, across campus and over long-haul networks – particularly given the implementation of 100-Gbps wide-area Ethernet networks and new developments in InfiniBand networks. We especially encourage submissions on the implications for data storage architectures given changing time and financial costs for bulk movement of data over long distances: If we are to create a national research data infrastructure architecture, how do we do that? (Submission type: Paper) * Software and Software Environments. This track will focus on the software generally visible to the end user — applications, gateways or other software that enables clusters to be accessible to scientists, artists, clinicians and engineers of today and tomorrow. Of particular interest are submissions from software developers or software vendors regarding challenges and opportunities in the deployment and use of software on clusters, and considerations on software innovation and sustainability. Papers on science gateways related to use of clusters and cluster integration into campus cyberinfrastructure are of particular interest. (Submission type: Paper) * Education, Outreach, and Training (EOT). This is a new addition for Cluster 2013. The EOT track invites technical and advocacy/position papers related to the training and education needs of students at the high school, undergraduate and graduate levels. These should be technically oriented papers regarding, for example, programming languages and training, software engineering and education or cluster management and workforce development. Papers can either be success stories (on efforts that help advance education and training in computational science and engineering) or position papers that advocate better training for technically oriented students (for example, arguing that computer science departments should return to teaching high performance languages in addition to teaching Java.) Organizers especially encourage submissions that address the inclusion of traditionally underrepresented and underserved communities (including women, minorities and people with disabilities), institutions and disciplines. (Submission type: Technical paper or position/advocacy paper) * Tutorials. The first day of the program will be reserved for tutorials. Half- and full-day tutorials provide participants with in-depth training on effectively managing or using cluster resources and services. Topics may cover a broad range of expertise and topics – including security, cluster management, file systems, gateways, visualization, grid environments, data-intensive science, data management, maximizing productivity, computational science, parallel programming, optimization, systems management, the allocations process and writing proposals. * Tutorial presenters will receive an honorarium. Submissions should cover what attendees will learn and include a syllabus, a slide deck from a recent tutorial (if one exists) or a draft slide deck, and a listing of equipment needs. For example, proposals might list a projector for just a presentation, or a projector and workstations with minimum specifications for a hands-on tutorial. (Submission type: Tutorial proposal) * Panels. Panel sessions provide an opportunity for conference attendees to engage in expert discussions on topics critical to the role of clusters in cyberinfrastructure strategy. Proposals should describe why the topic is timely and relevant to Cluster 2013, and why panelists are well qualified to facilitate a lively, interesting and informative discussion. Please include a proposed duration (90 minutes is the suggested default), with one-third of the total time allocated for discussion, as well as a list of potential panelists. (Submission type: Panel) * Posters. Please present new results or promising work in progress concerning the use of clusters. (Submission types: Abstract and optional mockup) * Visualization Showcase. This provides a digital gallery of the powerful, evocative imagery derived at least in part by the use of clusters – either interactively or rendered in advance. (Submission type: Abstract with images from planned visualization or similar past visualizations) * Birds of a Feather (BOF). BOF sessions are intended to engage attendees in exciting, informal, interactive gatherings devoted to forward-looking topics drawn from the conference. (Submission type: Proposal) * Workshops. The final day of the conference will be reserved for topical workshops arranged by participants who wish to share information on projects they are leading. These synergistic workshops leverage the availability of participants, economizing travel funds to aid projects in areas related to cluster computing and its applications. (Submission type: Proposal) * Student Poster Contest. Students are invited to submit posters demonstrating how they use clusters – including models, simulations and visualizations – to solve science, engineering or math problems, or to describe new advances in cluster management and programming technology. Awards will recognize the best poster in the high school, undergraduate and graduate categories. (Submission type: Abstract) * Student Research Papers. Undergraduate and graduate students who are working on research projects that use cluster technology are welcome to submit to one of the following conference tracks: Cluster Management; Cluster Technology; Software and Software Environments; or Education, Outreach and Training. Please include a cover page indicating that this is a student submission. (Submission type: Paper) * Best Paper Awards. by Frincu G. Marc - Eduard 05 Apr '13

05 Apr '13

===================== Call for Papers ================ ======> SYNASC - distributed computing track 2013 <====== ========================================================= 15th International Symposium on Symbolic and Numeric Algorithms for Scientific Computing SYNASC 2013 Distributed computing track http://www.synasc.ro/tracks/distributed-computing/ During the past 14 years SYNASC (http://synasc13.info.uvt.ro) has built a strong nucleus of researchers which gather every year to discuss their ongoing research. The multidisciplinary nature of the conference brings together people from various computer science areas, including symbolic computing, numerical analysis, multi-agent systems, nature inspired processing and distributed/parallel computing. All these are hot topics in computer science and provide the attendees with the chance of uncovering interdisciplinary research ideas and concrete use cases for their work. Among them, distributed computing, with an increasing interest in clouds and HPC on clouds, is in the unique position of being at the center of the scene. It allows researchers from various fields to extend their experiments and test their ideas on large scale infrastructures. In this frame the Distributed Computing track is a great opportunity for scientists working on topics related to clouds, grids, P2P, Internet of things or distributed systems in general to present their work, discover new challenges and find real use cases and applications for their research. With the global focus leaning towards (inter-) cloud and utility computing researchers start to feel the benefit of these systems too. However we feel there is much to be done before existing applications from other fields can be fully ported on these new platforms. SYNASC and the Distributed Computing track is therefore a great opportunity for addressing the interdisciplinary applicability of distributed systems. ------------------- Topics of interest: ------------------- We invite both researchers and practitioners to submit their work and join us in addressing these challenges. Work-in-progress and mature research papers in the following non-exhaustive areas are welcomed: - parallel and distributed algorithms for clouds, GPUs, HPC, P2P systems, autonomous systems. Work should focus on scheduling, scaling, load balancing, networks, fault-tolerance, gossip algorithms, energy saving; - applications for parallel and distributed systems, including work on cross disciplinary (scientific) applications for grids/clouds, web applications, workflow platforms, network measurement tools, programming environments; - architectures for parallel and distributed systems, including self-managing and autonomous systems, negotiation protocols, HPC on clouds, GPU processing, PaaS for (inter)cloud, brokering platforms, mobile computing; - modeling of parallel and distributed systems including models on resources and networks, semantic representation, negotiation, social networks, trace management, simulators; - any other topic deemed relevant to the field. --------------------------- Important conference dates: --------------------------- 07 April 2013 : Special sessions / Workshops / Tutorials proposals 19 May 2013 : Abstract submission 26 May 2013 : Paper submission 22 July 2013 : Notification of acceptance 01 September 2013 : Registration 08 September 2013 : Revised papers according to the reviews 23-26 September 2013 : Symposium 30 November 2013 : Final papers for post-proceedings ----------------- Paper submission: ----------------- Paper submission should not exceed 8 IEEE double column format pages and should be submitted using the electronic EasyChair system (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=synasc2013) Submitted work will benefit from a blind review of at least 3 experts in the area and will be judged based on their relevance to the track, novelty, clarity of text and future impact. Prospective authors must demonstrate their intention of submitting their work by first submitting a 1/2 page abstract clearly indicating the main purpose and contributions of their paper. A special issue for the distributed track is planned to be published with the Scalable Computing: Practice and Experience Journal. SCPE is a quarterly open access journal indexed in Scopus, DBLP, DOAJ and EBSCO. The journal is currently under ISI Thomson review. More information about it can be found at http://www.scpe.org/ . ------ Venue: ------ The city of Timisoara, Romania, hosts several prestigious academic institutions (the West University, the “Politehnica” University, the University of Medicine, and others). The city and the surrounding region have an unique history in Romania, being over the centuries an object of dispute for several states (Roman, Hungarian, Ottoman, Austrian), which left their still visible marks, and, above all, a very multicultural society which constitutes a beautiful example of harmony in Romania and in the Balkans (30 Km from Serbia). Timisoara is connected by direct flights with Bucharest, Budapest, Munich, Roma, London, Madrid and other cities in Europe. ---------------------- Chairs and committees: ---------------------- Program chair: Nikolaj Bjorner, Microsoft Research, US Track chairs: Marc Frincu, West University of Timisoara Romania and University of Strasbourg France Karoly Bosa, Johannes Kepler University, Austria PC members: Nikolaj Bjorner, Microsoft Research, USA Karoly Bosa, Research Institute for Symbolic Computation, Austria Valentin Cristea, University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania Marc Frincu, West University of Timisoara Romania and University of Strasbourg, France Stéphane Genaud, INRIA, France Sylvia Ilieva, Sofia University, Bulgaria Michael Krieger, Research Institute for Symbolic Computation, Austria Cezary Mazurek, Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center, Polland Dana Petcu, West University of Timisoara and e-Austria Research Institute, Romania Tomas Pitner, Masaryk University, Faculty of Informatics, Czech Republic Florin Pop, University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania Radu Prodan, University of Innsbruck, Austria Romain Rouvoy, University Lille 1 - INRIA, France Wolfgang Schreiner, Research Institute for Symbolic Computation, Austria Frederic Suter, CNRS, France Mircea Trifu, FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik, Germany Jose Luis Vazquez-Poletti, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain

CFP: ACM International Workshop on Manycore Embedded Systems (MES) @ ISCA-13
by Masoud Daneshtalab 04 Apr '13

04 Apr '13

(Please accept our apologies for multiple postings of this announcement) Call for Paper ACM International Workshop on Manycore Embedded Systems (MES) in conjunction with the 40th International symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA-2013) http://computersystems.utu.fi/MES/index.htm Special Issue: Elsevier's Microprocessors and Microsystems Journal (MICPRO) 23-27 June 2013, Tel-Aviv submission deadline extension: 14th April, 2013 General Scope Many-core embedded systems (MES) are moving towards the integration of hundreds cores on a single chip and hold the promise of increasing performance through parallelism. As the number of cores integrated into a chip increases, the on-chip communication becomes power and performance bottleneck in future MES. Network-on-Chip (NoC) architecture has been proposed as the most viable solution to meet the performance and design productivity requirements of the complex on-chip communication infrastructure. NoC provides an infrastructure for better modularity, scalability, fault-tolerance, and higher bandwidth compared to traditional infrastructures. On the other hand, developing applications using the full power of NoC-based MES requires software developers to transition from writing serial programs to writing parallel programs. On top of that, for managing many-core resources, contemporary Operating Systems (OS) have been designed to run on a small number of reliable cores and are not able to scale up to hundreds of cores. Therefore, designing scalable and faultless OSs will be a tremendous challenge in future MES. The goal of this workshop is to bring together the researchers from academia and the experts from industry to present and discuss innovative ideas and solutions in the design, modeling, prototyping, programming, and implementation of MES. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * NoCs (routing, arbitration, switch architecture, etc.) * Mapping of applications (static, dynamic, etc.) * OS (centralized, distributed, scheduling, allocation, memory management, etc.) * Reliability issues * Physical design * 3D stacked technology * Synthesis, verification, debug & test * Performance and power issues * Reconfigurability aspects * FPGA implementation * Programming model and scalable software * Compiler technologies * Many-core as accelerators * Heterogeneity challenges * Cyber-Physical Systems * Low power and power management Submissions from EU projects in progress as well as seminal work in the field are also encouraged. Submissions should not exceed 8 pages, including tables and figures, and must be formatted in accordance to the ACM two column style. Submission of a paper should be regarded as an undertaking that, should the paper be accepted, at least one of the authors will register for the conference and present the work. Short papers (up to 4 pages) will also be accepted. Proceeding and Special Issue: The accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Selected papers will be considered to appear in a special issue of the Elsevier's Microprocessors and Microsystems Journal (MICPRO). Instruction for Paper Submissions: You are invited to submit original and unpublished research works on topics related to many-core embedded systems. Submitted papers must not have been published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Please submit a PDF copy of your full manuscript, not to exceed 8 double-column ACM formatted pages, and include up to 6 keywords and an abstract of no more than 400 words. Papers must be formatted in accordance to the ACM two column style. ACM Word or LaTeX style templates are available here<http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates>. In addition, Authors should apply ACM Computing Classification<http://www.acm.org/about/class/1998> categories and terms. Submit a PDF copy of your full manuscript to the Workshop EasyChair link at: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mes2013. Important Dates: Submission deadline: 1st April 2013 -> 14th April, 2013 Notification of acceptance: 10th May 2013 Camera ready: 20th May 2013 Organizers: Masoud Daneshtalab, University of Turku, Finland Ahmed Hemani, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden Maurizio Palesi, Kore University, Italy
