CFP: 2nd Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE2)
by Daniel S. Katz 13 May '14

13 May '14

2nd Workshop on Sustainable Software for Science: Practice and Experiences (WSSSPE2) http://wssspe.researchcomputing.org.uk/wssspe2/ (to be held in conjunction with SC14, Sunday, 16 November 2014, New Orleans, LA, USA) Progress in scientific research is dependent on the quality and accessibility of software at all levels and it is critical to address challenges related to the development, deployment, and maintenance of reusable software as well as education around software practices. These challenges can be technological, policy based, organizational, and educational, and are of interest to developers (the software community), users (science disciplines), and researchers studying the conduct of science (science of team science, science of organizations, science of science and innovation policy, and social science communities). The WSSSPE1 workshop (http://wssspe.researchcomputing.org.uk/WSSSPE1) engaged the broad scientific community to identify challenges and best practices in areas of interest for sustainable scientific software. At WSSSPE2, we invite the community to propose and discuss specific mechanisms to move towards an imagined future practice of software development and usage in science and engineering. The workshop will include multiple mechanisms for participation, encourage team building around solutions, and identify risky solutions with potentially transformative outcomes. Participation by early career students and postdoctoral researchers is strongly encouraged. We invite short (4-page) actionable papers that will lead to improvements for sustainable software science. These papers could be a call to action, or could provide position or experience reports on sustainable software activities. The papers will be used by the organizing committee to design sessions that will be highly interactive and targeted towards facilitating action. Submitted papers should be archived by a third-party service that provides DOIs. We encourage submitters to license their papers under a Creative Commons license that encourages sharing and remixing, as we will combine ideas (with attribution) into the outcomes of the workshop. The organizers will invite one or more submitters of provocative papers to start the workshop by presenting highlights of their papers in a keynote presentation to initiate active discussion that will continue throughout the day. Areas of interest for WSSSPE2, include, but are not limited to: • defining software sustainability in the context of science and engineering software • how to evaluate software sustainability • improving the development process that leads to new software • methods to develop sustainable software from the outset • effective approaches to reusable software created as a by-product of research • impact of computer science research on the development of scientific software • recommendations for the support and maintenance of existing software • software engineering best practices • governance, business, and sustainability models • the role of community software repositories, their operation and sustainability • reproducibility, transparency needs that may be unique to science • successful open source software implementations • incentives for using and contributing to open source software • transitioning users into contributing developers • building large and engaged user communities • developing strong advocates • measurement of usage and impact • encouraging industry’s role in sustainability • engagement of industry with volunteer communities • incentives for industry • incentives for community to contribute to industry-driven projects • recommending policy changes • software credit, attribution, incentive, and reward • issues related to multiple organizations and multiple countries, such as intellectual property, licensing, etc. • mechanisms and venues for publishing software, and the role of publishers • improving education and training • best practices for providing graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in domain communities with sufficient training in software development • novel uses of sustainable software in education (K-20) • case studies from students on issues around software development in the undergraduate or graduate curricula • careers and profession • successful examples of career paths for developers • institutional changes to support sustainable software such as promotion and tenure metrics, job categories, etc. Submissions: Submissions of up to four pages should be formatted to be easily readable and submitted to an open access repository that provides unique identifiers (e.g., DOIs) that can be cited, for example http://arXiv.org or http://figshare.com. Once you have received an identifier for your self-published paper from a repository, submit it to WSSSPE2 by creating a new submission at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=wssspe2, and entering: • author information for all authors • title • abstract (with the identifier as the first line of the abstract, for example, http://dx.doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.791606 or http://arxiv.org/abs/1404.7414 or alternative) • at least three keywords • tick the abstract only box Do not submit the paper itself through EasyChair; the identifier in the abstract that points to the paper is sufficient. Deadline for Submission: 14 July 2014 (any time of day, no extensions) Travel Support Funds are available to support participation in WSSSPE2 by 1) US-based students, early-career researchers, and members of underrepresented groups; and 2) participants who would not otherwise attend the SC14 conference. CFP - Energy Efficient Data, Services and Memory Management in Big Data Information Systems
by Miranda.Zhang＠csiro.au 13 May '14

13 May '14

Information Sciences Special Section on: Energy Efficient Data, Services and Memory Management in Big Data Information Systems (EnergyIS) As we delve deeper into the 'Digital Age', we are witnessing an explosive growth in the variety, velocity, and volume of data being transmitted over the Internet. A zettabyte of data was transferred on the Internet in the past year resulting from internet search, social media, Internet of Things, business transactions, and content distribution. The rapid migration of Big Data Infromation Systems (e.g., fraud detection in banking transaction, product sentiment analysis, etc.) to datacentre computing environments is fuelling an increasing concern about the growing demand for electricity and related carbon emissions. One of the major causes of energy inefficiency in Information Systems is the idle power wasted when datacentre servers providing computing and storage capabilities run at low utilization. Even at a very low server load, such as 10% server utilization, the power consumed is over 50% of the peak power. Similarly, if the disk, network, or any such datacentre resource becomes the performance bottleneck, other datacentre resources will consequently become idle and waste a lot of energy. Hence, there is a need to develop methods and techniques that provide sustainable processing of Big Data generated by information systems with high energy efficiency (lower carbon footprint), increased product longevity (reducing the need for computing and cooling equipment replacement), maintaining the current throughput of the system and lightweight memory management, meeting service level commitments (e.g., availability, reliability, fairness, response time, etc.). This special section will primarily encompass models, simulators, and practical approaches that advance research in all aspects of designing, developing, and modeling energy efficient Big Data IS. Successful contributions may range from advanced technologies, models, applications, and innovative solutions for today's Big Data processing IS. It is expected that this special section will attract a significant number of submissions from academia and industry, readership, and consequently numerous citations of the published contributions. Recommended topic areas include, but are not limited to: * Techniques for energy-efficient consolidation of IS workload over datacentres * Monitoring techniques of the energy consumption in IS systems * Energy efficient IS application architectures * Energy awareness in Big Data processing and storage * Optimizing energy efficiency while avoiding datacentre resource contention * Predictable scheduling and provisioning of Big Data streams on IS datacenters * Energy-aware memory management in IS The submitted papers must be original, neither published anywhere else nor under any simultaneous consideration in any other venue. They must be written in excellent English. Previously published conference papers should be clearly identified by the authors (at the submission stage) and an explanation should be provided how such papers have been extended to be considered for this special section. Extended conference contributions must have at least 50% difference from the original works (the authors must indicate the conference name and make the reference to the base conference paper). All submissions will be filtered through the selected anti-plagiarism software by the guest editors. The submitted papers will be reviewed by at least three independent reviewers. Final decisions on accepted papers will be approved by the journal editors. Manuscripts must be prepared for publication according to the journal's Author Guidelines available at the following webpage: http://ees.elsevier.com/ins/ Tentative schedule: Manuscript Due June 15, 2014 First Decision Date September 14, 2014 Revision Due October 26, 2014 Second Revision and Second Decision Date November 30, 2014 Final Decision and Camera Ready Due December 14, 2014 Guest Editors: Joanna Kołodziej*, Institute of Computer Science, Cracow University of Technology, Poland, e-mail: jokolodziej(a)pk.edu.pl Rajiv Ranjan, CSIRO Computational Informatics, Decision and User Science Laboratory, Australia, e-mail: raj.ranjan(a)csiro.au Tadeusz Burczyński, Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland, e-mail: tburczynski(a)ippt.pan.pl Albert Y. CALL FOR POSITION PAPERS : Workshop on Modeling & Simulation of Exascale Systems & Applications - due June 15
by Vetter, Jeffrey S. 12 May '14

12 May '14

CALL FOR POSITION PAPERS Workshop on Modeling & Simulation of Systems & Applications August 13-14, 2014, Seattle, WA Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research Workshop URL: http://hpc.pnl.gov/modsim/2014/ Submission URL: http://j.mp/modsim2014 SUBMISSIONS DUE ON JUNE 15 (11:59 PM EDT) =========================================================================== Meeting the performance, energy-efficiency, and resilience requirements of systems and applications at all scales from embedded to exascale will require rapid, accurate, and dynamic evaluation of tradeoffs. To provide these capabilities, significant advances in predictive modeling and simulation methods are needed. Models are key tools in the area of application/system co-design. As applications and systems evolve, models must be able to track ongoing complex changes and predict the impact of developments in both software and hardware design. While today's methods tend to focus on application performance as the metric of concern, modeling methods must evolve to consider performance, power consumption, and reliability in concert. It is critical to develop tools and techniques that will allow modeling capability to spread into the larger computational science community where it will have the greatest possible impact. Simulation and emulation capabilities must also expand along multiple directions, including scalability improvements, interoperability, support for system design from embedded to the extreme scale, and interfaces with modeling tools. As part of the process, we solicit community input, in the form of position papers that describe novel research approaches for performance modeling and simulation at extreme scales. Position papers should address one or more of the following areas. 1. Integrated Modeling and Simulation of Performance, Power and Reliability Both integrated modeling of multiple physical phenomena and the ability to capture the impact on the architecture and applications are significant challenges. Position papers are encouraged that address: 1) modeling and understanding of the relationships between physical phenomena, such as temperature, energy, power, and reliability, and their impact on devices; 2) their impact at the microarchitecture and system levels; and 3) how modeling can help to maximize system-level performance and power attributes; 4) novel techniques and ideas for modeling of performance, power/energy, and reliability in an unified fashion. 2. Standards, Integration, and Interoperability of ModSim Methodologies and Tools. Without interoperable, best-practice-based, validated models, ModSim risks becoming an expensive process whose actual development may exceed a useful timeframe compared to the lifespan of systems. We are seeking white paper contributions related to many aspects of this topic: interfaces, best practices, how different methodologies can cooperate, verification and validation in support of interoperability, integration of modsim for various layers of the HW-SW stack, just to name a few. ----- Submissions ----- The Organizing Committee will review these position papers and invite selected contributors to participate in the workshop to be held on August 13-14th, 2014, in Seattle, WA. Responsive submissions will be made public via the workshop website and selected papers may be included in a post-workshop proceedings, if the decision is made for publication of proceedings. The previous workshop report can be found here, and submissions can be made with EasyChair at http://j.mp/modsim2014. ----- Requirements ----- Position papers (up to 2 pages) should describe a fundamental computer science research approach in the development of performance modeling and simulation approaches to address the key challenges associated with high performance, energy efficient computing systems from embedded to extreme scale. This description should be followed by a brief summary of related work and an assessment of the approach based on the following dimensions: Challenges addressed: Which modeling and/or simulation challenges does this approach address? Maturity: What are the indicators that this approach will address the identified challenges? Uniqueness: To what extent is the proposed approach unique? Could it be addressed by other research programs? Novelty: How is this approach different from existing solutions? Applicability: To what extent will the proposed approach, if successful, be applicable to other areas? Effort: How much effort is needed to effectively explore this approach? The paper may include any number of authors, but must provide contact information for a single "contact" author. There is no limit to the number of position papers that an individual or group can submit. Authors are strongly encouraged to follow the structure presented above. Authors of selected position papers will be invited to participate in a workshop based on the overall quality of the position paper(s) and our expectation that their inclusion in the workshop will stimulate constructive discussion by workshop participants. Unique positions that are well presented and emphasize transformative approaches will be given preference. Finally, all position papers will be made available online on the workshop website. ----- Summary ----- Length: Up to 2 pages (a list of cited references does not count against this limit). Due Date: 11:59 PM EDT on June 15th. Submission site: http://j.mp/modsim2014 Notification of Selection for Workshop Presentation: July 12th. by Gregorio Martinez 12 May '14

12 May '14

Call for Papers Workshop on Privacy-Preserving Cyberspace Safety and Security. Paris, August 20th 2014 Main conference: http://conference.css2014.studiocheik.fr/ Workshop: http://www.uni-saarland.de/lehrstuhl/sorge/workshops/workshop-on-privacy-pr… The workshop is held in conjunction with The 6th Symposium on Cyberspace Safety and Security (CSS 2014). In dependence on the main conference that seeks research submissions on a safe and secure cyberspace, the workshop puts its focus on privacy protection in such an environment. While achieving cyberspace safety and security, deploying defense systems, and deterring potential attacks are already demanding tasks, coming up with methods to do that in a privacy-preserving way is even more challenging. The aim of this workshop is to foster research efforts to combine those (contradicting) worlds and to present new methods that lie in between that area of conflict. Thus, the scope and interests are also closely related to those of the main conference (but are not limited to): - Data and Applications Security - Network and Communications Security - Software and Systems Security - Cloud Security All of those areas of interest still require research efforts on privacy protection and the implications of safety and security mechanisms for the cyberspace need to be investigated as well from a technical as well as from a legal and a social perspective. Thus, we are seeking for submissions presenting novel results from researchers of different disciplines like practical and theoretical computer sciences, legal research, etc. Important Dates: - Paper submission deadline: May, 31st, 2014 - Notification of acceptance: June, 30th, 2014 - Camera ready due: July, 15th 2014 Paper Submission: Papers should be written in English conforming to the IEEE conference proceedings format (8.5" x 11", Two-Column). Papers should be submitted through the paper submission system at the main conference website. Full Papers (up to 8 pages, or 12 pages with the over length charge) and Short Papers (up to 4 pages) are solicited. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers. The accepted papers from this workshop will be submitted for publication by IEEE Computer Society in IEEE proceedings and submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore as well as other Abstracting and Indexing (A&I) databases (indexed by EI Compendex).
