CFP: SI CCPE Negative Results in eScience
by Ketan Maheshwari 15 Sep '15

15 Sep '15

CCPE Special Issue on Negative Results in eScience (ERROR 2015) =========== Concurrency and Computation: Practice and Experience Special Issue: Negative Results in eScience Editors: Ketan Maheshwari, Silvia Olabarriaga, Daniel S. Katz, Justin M. Wozniak, Douglas Thain =========== Ever-increasing problem and data sizes in e-science endeavours imply that researchers must deal with novelty in multiple dimensions, some of which are beyond their control. A combination of such factors increases the likelihood that some of the obtained results will not be useful in the context of the goals of the original project: the results are negative (deviating from initial hypothesis), abnormal (anomalous to results from similar studies), null (absence of results) or otherwise unexpected. Under normal circumstances, such negative results are never published, and the reasons why they were obtained are seldom discussed and analyzed. Useful lessons might be lost. Documenting and more widely communicating these experiences will benefit the community and help recover some positive return from the expended efforts and cost. The 1st workshop on E-science ReseaRch leading to negative Results (ERROR) workshop was organized in conjunction with the 11th IEEE International Conference on eScience (eScience 2015) to provide a forum for communication of such experiences (http://press3.mcs.anl.gov/errorworkshop) The CCPE Special Issue on "Negative Results in eScience" will combine extended versions of papers presented at the this workshop with other, open submissions. Major topics of interest for this special issue include (but are not limited to) * Unforeseen technology/problem/technique misfits * Institutional policies (on rejected research) * Failures and obstacles faced during a successful research work * Controversial results because of undiscovered technological/technical glitch * Unconventional results which contradict theoretical expectations * Discovery of better approaches after a significant efforts spent on research * Inadequate or misconfigured infrastructure * Abnormal and anomalous results * Ongoing research with setbacks and lessons learned * A hypothesis with one or more limiting assumptions * Discovery of unexpected behavior in hardware, networks or platforms * Data size that is too big or too small for the applied technique * Implementation of simulation tools based on incorrect physical observations * Defect in software design, architecture and/or user interface * Software and platform incompatibilities The papers should be of 10-12 pages following the CCPE submission guidelines. Papers should be submitted via Manuscript Central as "ERROR 2015". Important dates: * 1 December, 2015: paper submission * 1 February, 2015: announcement of preliminary decisions * 20 February, 2016: submission of revised papers (selected) * 5 March, 2016: announcement of final decisions * 20 March, 2016: upload of camera-ready papers

CFP Reminder: PMAM 2016 - The Seventh International Workshop on Programming Models and Applications for Multicores and Manycores
by Kai-Cheung Leung 15 Sep '15

15 Sep '15

The Seventh International Workshop on Programming Models and Applications for Multicores and Manycores will be co-located with the PPoPP 2016 conference in March 12-16, 2016, Barcelona, Spain. Rapid advancements in multicore and chip-level multi-threading technologies open new challenges and make multicore systems a part of the computing landscape. From high-end servers to mobile phones, multicores and manycores are steadily entering every single aspect of the information technology. However most programmers are trained in sequential programming, yet most existing parallel programming models are prone to errors such as data race and deadlock. Therefore to fully utilise multicore and manycore hardware, parallel programming models that allow easy transition of sequential programs to parallel programs with good performance and enable development of error-free codes are urgently needed. This workshop is dedicated primarily to gather researchers and practitioners addressing the main challenges and share experiences in the emerging multicore and manycore software engineering and distributed programming paradigm. This workshop aims to provide a discussion forum for people interested in programming environments, models, tools and applications specifically designed for parallel multicore and manycore hardware environments. The program committee cordially invites any novel research ideas in (but not limited to) the following topics: * programming models and systems for multicore, manycore, and clusters of multicore/manycore * multicore and manycore software engineering * parallel and distributed algorithms on GPU and multicore clusters * parallel libraries and frameworks * performance analysis, efficiency and effectiveness * massively parallel processing on multicore/manycore systems and clusters * automated parallelization and compilation techniques * debugging and performance autotuning tools and techniques for multicore/manycore applications * parallel algorithms, applications and benchmarks on multicore/manycore systems * runtime power/energy management on multicore/manycore systems and clusters * fault tolerance and resilience Important Dates: Paper submission deadline : November 16, 2015 Notification of acceptance : December 14, 2015 Camera-ready papers due : January 11, 2016 Papers reporting original and unpublished research results and experience are solicited. All paper submissions will be handled electronically via EasyChair. http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pmam2016 Papers must not exceed 10 pages in standard ACM two-column conference format (preprint mode, with page number and the 9pt template). Authors must register and submit their paper through the online submission system. If you have problems accessing the system, e-mail your submission to: pmam2016(a)cs.otago.ac.nz Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library, and will be included in the Elsevier databases Scopus and Compendex (EI indexed) Selected best papers of PMAM will be considered for publication in a special issue of The International Journal of High Performance Computing Applications.
