[DEADLINE EXTENSION] Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining
by Massimo Cafaro 16 Nov '17

16 Nov '17

Special Issue on Parallel and Distributed Data Mining Information Sciences, Elsevier Submission deadline: February 1st, 2018 The sheer volume of new data, which is being generated at an increasingly fast pace, has already produced an anticipated data deluge that is difficult to challenge. We are in the presence of an overwhelming vast quantity of data, owing to how easy is to produce or derive digital data. Even the storage of this massive amount of data is becoming a highly demanding task, outpacing the current development of hardware and software infrastructure. Nonetheless, this effort must be undertaken now for the preservation, organization and long-term maintenance of these precious data. However, the collected data is useless without our ability fully understand and make use of it. Therefore, we need new algorithms to address this challenge. Data mining techniques and algorithms to process huge amount of data in order to extract useful and interesting information have become popular in many different contexts. Algorithms are required to make sense of data automatically and in efficient ways. Nonetheless, even though sequential computer systems performance is improving, they are not suitable to keep up with the increase in the demand for data mining applications and the data size. Moreover, the main memory of sequential systems may not be enough to hold all the data related to current applications. This Special Issue takes into account the increasing interest in the design and implementation of parallel and distributed data mining algorithms. Parallel algorithms can easily address both the running time and memory requirement issues, by exploiting the vast aggregate main memory and processing power of processors and accelerators available on parallel computers. Anyway, parallelizing existing algorithms in order to achieve good performance and scalability with regard to massive datasets is not trivial. Indeed, it is of paramount importance a good data organization and decomposition strategy in order to balance the workload while minimizing data dependences. Another concern is related to minimizing synchronization and communication overhead. Finally, I/O costs should be minimized as well. Creating breakthrough parallel algorithms for high-performance data mining applications requires addressing several key computing problems which may lead to novel solutions and new insights in interdisciplinary applications. Moreover, increasingly the data is spread among different geographically distributed sites. Centralized processing of this data is very inefficient and expensive. In some cases, it may even be impractical and subject to security risks. Therefore, processing the data minimizing the amount of data being exchanged whilst guaranteeing at the same time correctness and efficiency is an extremely important challenge. Distributed data mining performs data analysis and mining in a fundamentally distributed manner paying careful attention to resource constraints, in particular bandwidth limitation, privacy concerns and computing power. The focus of this Special Issue is on all forms of advances in high-performance and distributed data mining algorithms and applications. The topics relevant to the Special Issue include (but are not limited to) the following. TOPICS OF INTEREST Scalable parallel data mining algorithms using message-passing, shared-memory or hybrid programming paradigms Exploiting modern parallel architectures including FPGA, GPU and many-core accelerators for parallel data mining applications Middleware for high-performance data mining on grid and cloud environments Benchmarking and performance studies of high-performance data mining applications Novel programming paradigms to support high-performance computing for data mining Performance models for high-performance data mining applications and middleware Programming models, tools, and environments for high-performance computing in data mining Map-reduce based parallel data mining algorithms Caching, streaming, pipelining, and other optimization techniques for data management in high-performance computing for data mining Novel distributed data mining algorithms SUBMISSION GUIDELINES All manuscripts and any supplementary material should be submitted electronically through Elsevier Editorial System (EES) at http://ees.elsevier.com/ins (http://ees.elsevier.com/ins) The authors must select as “SI:PDDM” when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process. CfP - Special Issue on Cloud and Fog Computing for Smart Cities Data Analytics and Visualisation
by Zaheer Khan 15 Nov '17

15 Nov '17

[Apologies if you got multiple copies of this email.] Call For Papers Special Issue on Cloud and Fog Computing for Smart Cities Data Analytics and Visualisation<https://www.journals.elsevier.com/future-generation-computer-systems/call-f…> in the Future Generation Computer Systems Journal Information and Communication Technologies are becoming the prime enabler for smart and sustainable cities in recent years. This is mainly due to realising and making effective use of the ever-increasing data generated in urban environments. Sensors, smart phones, geo-tagged devices, RFIDs, smart gadgets and Internet of Things are major source of collecting ever increasing temporal and geo-coded land-use, built-environment, transport, energy, health, socio-economic and environmental Big Data. Often data is kept in different repositories and managed by different departments, which raise data access, harmonisation, processing and information visualisation challenges for generating new insights and knowledge. Cloud and Fog/Edge are becoming enablers for managing cross-departmental temporal and geocoded Big Data, developing cross-thematic applications and providing necessary computation power to perform data analytics and present new knowledge to city stakeholders for awareness raising, city planning, policy development and decision making. High-performance visual processing techniques provide opportunity to intuitively present temporal and geo-coded information from neighbourhood scale to city or city-region scale and fosters innovation, co-creation and co-designing sustainable future cities. In the above context, the real value of smart city big data is gained by applying data mining, machine learning or new statistical methods for data analytics, visualisation and decision making. This becomes challenging when applied to large scale or real time data and hence requires appropriate tools and techniques to be applied using Cloud and Fog/Edge computing. These applications also require dealing with privacy and data security issues to avoid sharing intrusive details of citizens or other stakeholders. Important Dates: • Submission deadline: 1 March 2018 Topics of Interest Topics of interest include use of cloud and fog computing in smart cities but are not limited to: - Smart city data analytics - Geo-processing and innovative visualisation techniques - Spatial data techniques and tools for analytics - City data quality, harmonisation, integration and processing - Real-time city data processing and visualisation - Predictive analytics, visualisation and simulation for future city models - Visual computing and analytics for city applications - Interactive data analysis and visualisation - Smart city services and applications platforms - Security and privacy solutions for smart city applications - Crowd sourcing and establishing trust on data sources - Internet of Things for cross-thematic city applications - Methods and techniques for city data collection and curation - Automated and intelligent city data processing methods - Design patterns and computing models for smart city applications - Open government data for automated processing and knowledge generation - Decision support systems for smart cities - Data provenance techniques for city applications, decision making and policy making - Smart city applications: mobility, energy, public administration & governance, economy, health, security and environment. Submission Guidelines: This special issue is focused on cutting edge research from academia, industry and practitioners, with emphasis on original, novel, innovative and impact-oriented research providing insights into smart cities’ needs, processes, services and frameworks using Cloud and Fog/Edge computing. Call for Position Papers: Extreme Heterogeneity | due Dec 1
by Vetter, Jeffrey S. 15 Nov '17

15 Nov '17

Call for Position Papers: Extreme Heterogeneity Important Dates: * December 1, 2017: Position paper submission deadline * December 7, 2017: Contact authors will be notified of selection for workshop * January 23-25, 2018: Workshop dates Workshop URL: http://orau.gov/exheterogeneity2018/papers.htm Submission URL: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=weh2018 Motivation On behalf of the Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program in the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science and ASCR Program Manager Dr. Lucy Nowell, we are organizing a Workshop on Extreme Heterogeneity (EH). Extreme heterogeneity is the result of using multiple types of processors, accelerators and memory/storage in a single computing platform that must support a variety of application workflows to meet the needs of increasingly diverse scientific domains. Extremely heterogeneous supercomputers will be acquired by the ASCR-supported computing facilities as we reach the end of Moore's Law while still facing rapidly increasing computational and data intensive demands. The ASCR Computer Science research focus for this workshop is on system software, and software development tools and environments for supercomputers that will be delivered for operational use in the 2025-2040 timeframe. The purpose of the EH workshop is to more clearly define the challenges that extreme heterogeneity presents to the software stack and the scientific programming environment and to identify related Computer Science priority research directions that are essential to making extremely heterogeneous systems useful, usable, efficient, and secure for science applications and DOE mission requirements. The workshop aims to identify and prioritize research directions by analyzing existing and next-generation computer architectures. The workshop will target post-exascale architectures including novel technologies that may be developed in the "Post-Moore's Law era" and promising tools and techniques, such as advanced analytics and machine learning, that may enable efficient and productive utilization of such architectures. Participants will also discuss options to leverage methods developed by industry, such as approaches to improved developer productivity for Big Data. We anticipate participation by personnel from universities, industry, and DOE National Laboratories. The workshop will feature a variety of plenary talks and multiple breakout sessions, with every invitee expected to participate actively in discussion of potential research directions. Workshop participants will produce a report that will define basic needs and opportunities in computer science research to develop smart and trainable operating and runtime systems, execution models, and programming environments that will make future systems easier to tailor to the computing needs of scientists and for supercomputing facilities to securely deploy. Invitation We invite community input in the form of two-page position papers that identify and discuss key challenges posed for supercomputing operating and runtime systems, programming models, and software development environments for scientific computing by the trend towards increasing heterogeneity in supercomputer architectures and workflows. In addition to providing an avenue for identifying workshop participants, the position papers will be used to shape the workshop agenda, identify panelists, and contribute to the workshop report. Position papers should not describe the authors' current or planned research, nor should they recommend solutions or narrowly focused research topics. Rather, they should aim to improve the community's shared understanding of the problem space and help to stimulate discussion. Submission Guidelines Position papers should describe a fundamental computer science research direction that addresses key challenges associated with extreme heterogeneity. * Key Challenges: Which challenge(s) related to Extreme Heterogeneity does this paper address? * Research Direction: What is the promising research direction for this topic? * State of the Art: Across the community, identify state of the art for this research direction. This description should be followed by an assessment of potential research directions based on the following dimensions: * Maturity: Are there existing methods or computer science research directions that address the challenge(s) and that show promise for scientific computing? What are the indicators that a given method or approach will address the identified challenges? If there are not existing methods or research approaches to meeting the challenge, can you suggest ways to gain new insight into the problem space? * Timeliness: Why now? What breakthrough or change makes progress possible now? * Uniqueness: Is the identified challenge unique to scientific applications of supercomputing, whether for simulation or data intensive science? What makes it so? * Novelty: To what extent is existing method or approach unique to extreme heterogeneity in supercomputing for scientific research? Is the approach being addressed by other research programs? By the private sector? How is this approach different from existing approaches or solutions? Why should it be of interest to the ASCR Computer Science program? Each position paper must be no more than two pages, including figures and references. The paper may include any number of authors, but must provide contact information for a single author, who could represent the position paper at the workshop. There is no limit to the number of position papers that an individual or group can submit. Authors are strongly encouraged to follow the structure outlined above. Submit position papers in PDF format at the URL listed above. Selection Submissions will be reviewed by the Organizing Committee. Authors of selected submissions will be invited to participate in the workshop, which will be held on January 23-25, 2018, in Gaithersburg, MD. Authors are not expected to have a history of funding by the ASCR Computer Science program. Authors of selected position papers will be invited to participate in the workshop based on the overall quality of the position paper(s) and an expectation that their active participation in the workshop will stimulate constructive discussion by the workshop participants and contribute to an informative report. Unique positions that are well presented and emphasize potentially transformative research directions will be given preference. -- Jeffrey Vetter | +1-865-356-1649 | http://ft.ornl.gov/~vetter
