http://www.cs.utah.edu/groups/lcpc2018/ The Workshop on Languages and Compilers for Parallel Computing (LCPC) has been since its founding in 1988, a leading venue for research on parallel languages and compilers and many related topics related to parallel computing including parallelizing compilers, parallel programming models, runtime systems, and tools with a diverse domain of application. The wide scope of the workshop is unique in that spans the spectrum from foundational principles to practical experience, and from early ideas to polished results. LCPC encourages submissions that go outside its original scope of scientific computing to diverse areas that are enable or enhanced by the power of parallel systems such as mobile computing, big data, relevant aspects of machine learning, data centers, cognitive computing, etc. LCPC strongly encourages personal interaction and technical discussions along the initial material presented at the workshop and published its revised proceedings in LNCS later, after the meeting. Specific topics of LCPC 2018 include: Compilers for parallel computing Static, dynamic, and adaptive optimization of parallel programs Parallel programming models and languages Formal analysis and verification of parallel programs Parallel runtime systems and libraries Performance analysis and debugging tools for concurrency Parallel algorithms and concurrent data structures Parallel applications for Big Data, Machine Learning, Embedded Systems, Bio, IoT. The length is limited to 15 pages in the Springer LNCS format. Blue Sky Ideas papers that describe visionary ideas, long term challenges, and opportunities in research that are outside of the current mainstream topics of the field and which will provoke discussion or debate. The length is limited to 6 pages in the Springer LNCS format. Papers must be submitted in PDF format. There will be a pre-workshop, informal proceedings as well as a post-workshop one in LNCS series of Springer Verlag. The scope of the conference includes the development and analysis of methods for discovering scientific knowledge, coming from machine learning, data mining, intelligent data analysis, big data analysis as well as their application in various scientific domains. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Call for Abstracts MICRO 51 ACM Student Research Competition (SRC) ------------------------------------------------------------------ [Important Dates] Abstract submission: July 22, 2018 (11:59 pm EDT). Acceptance notification: Aug 15, 2018. The 51st International Symposium on Microarchitecture is the premier forum for presenting, discussing, and debating innovative microarchitecture ideas and techniques for advanced computing and communication systems. This symposium brings together researchers in fields related to microarchitecture, compilers, chips, and systems for technical exchange on traditional microarchitecture topics and emerging research areas. The MICRO community has enjoyed a close interaction between academic researchers and industrial designers and we aim to continue this tradition at MICRO-51. In 2018, MICRO will be held in Fukuoka, Japan. [Overview] The 51st International Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO) invites participation in the ACM Student Research Competition (SRC). Sponsored by ACM and Microsoft Research, the SRC is a forum for undergraduates and graduate students to share their research results, exchange ideas, and improve their communication skills while competing for prizes. Students accepted to participate in the SRC are entitled to a travel grant (up to $500) to help cover travel expenses. The top 3 undergraduate and graduate winners will receive the following prizes: 1. Monetary prizes of $500, $300, and $200, respectively. 2. A framed Grand Finalist certificate. 3. The names of the winners and their placement will be posted on the web site. 4. In addition, the first place winner in each category (undergraduate, graduate) will receive an invitation to participate in the SRC Grand Finals, an on-line round of competitions among the first place winners of individual conference-hosted SRCs. The top three graduate and undergraduate Grand Finalists will receive an additional $500, $300, and $200, respectively, along with Grand Finalist medals (gold, silver, bronze). Grand Finalists and their advisors will be invited to the Annual ACM Awards Banquet for an all-expenses-paid trip, where they will be recognized for their accomplishments, along with other prestigious ACM award winners, including the winner of the Turing Award. The SRC consists of two rounds: a poster session and a presentation session. Submissions recommended for acceptance by the selection committee will be invited to a first-round poster session to be held during Micro-51. A panel of judges will select a number of finalists from the poster session held at the symposium, who will be invited to a second-round SRC presentation session at MICRO 2018 and compete for the prizes. The evaluation will be concentrated on the quality of both visual and oral presentation, the research methods, and the significance of contribution. CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS AND DEMONSTRATIONS FHPC 2018 7th ACM SIGPLAN Workshop on Functional High-Performance Computing September 29, 2018, St. Louis, Missouri, USA https://icfp18.sigplan.org/track/FHPC-2018-papers The 7th ACM SIGPLAN Workshop on Functional High-Performance Computing (FHPC 2018) is being held as in previous years in conjunction with the International Conference on Functional Programming (ICFP 2018) together with numerous other workshops/symposia, and as a first, colocated with Strange Loop, in St. Louis, MO, USA. Workshop Objectives The FHPC 2018 workshop seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners exploring uses of functional (or more generally, declarative or high-level) programming systems or concepts in application domains where high performance is essential. The aim of the meeting is to enable sharing of results, experiences, and novel ideas about how high-level, declarative specifications of computationally challenging problems can serve as maintainable and portable code that approaches (or even exceeds) the performance of machine-oriented (low-level) imperative implementations. All aspects of performance-critical programming and parallel programming are in scope for the workshop, irrespective of hardware target. This includes both traditional large-scale distributed-memory scientific computing (HPC), as well as work targeting single node systems with SMPs, GPUs, FPGAs, or embedded processors. FHPC 2018 seeks to encourage a range of submissions, focusing on work in progress and facilitating early exchange of ideas and open discussion on innovative and/or emerging results. Original research, experience reports, case studies, and evaluations of programming systems are all welcome. Work on incorporation of functional programming concepts into more traditional (imperative) HPC applications is explicitly solicited. Papers, Presentations, and Demonstrations The refereed paper deadline has passed. In the workshop spirit, the refereed paper presentation program is being augmented to include less formally reviewed presentations in the form of talks not based on accepted papers, and software demonstrations. Topic areas of interest include research or development in progress, experience reports, and position/white paper statements. Proposals will be subject to a mild reviewing process to insure relevance and general interest to FHPC. We expect time slots to be between one-half and one hour. Prospective presenters are requested to submit an abstract describing their proposed contribution via the paper submission site. The deadline is July 29, 2018, midnight anywhere on Earth, but the PC reserves the right to accept proposals at any time after submission. As such, early submission is strongly encouraged. EduHPC is a workshop concerned with the education of High Performance Computing, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Computation Science, and Data Science; not only in a dedicated course but at all levels of the computing education stages. EduHPC is seeking two types of submissions. Submissions of Regular Papers are meant to discuss deeply educational material and techniques. Submission of Peachy Assignments are meant to present exciting assignments that can be used in classes. Even casual users of computing devices now depend on parallel processing. Therefore, it is important for every computer user (and especially every programmer) to understand how parallelism and distributed computing affect problem solving. It is essential for educators to impart a range of PDC and HPC knowledge and skills at multiple levels within the educational fabric woven by Computer Science (CS), Computer Engineering (CE), and related computational curricula including data science. Companies and laboratories need people with these skills, and, as a result, they are finding that they must now engage in extensive on-the-job training. Nevertheless, rapid changes in hardware platforms, languages, and programming environments increasingly challenge educators to decide what to teach and how to teach it, in order to prepare students for careers that are increasingly likely to involve PDC and HPC. This workshop invites unpublished manuscripts from academia, industry, and government laboratories on topics pertaining to the augmentation of undergraduate and graduate education in Computer Science and Engineering, Computational Science, and computational courses for both STEM and business disciplines with PDC and HPC concepts. Recently, the workshop also extended its focus to data science and computational science education. Additionally, we highly encourage manuscripts that validate their innovative approaches through the systematic collection and analysis of information to evaluate their performance and impact. The workshop is particularly dedicated to bringing together stakeholders from industry (both hardware vendors and employers), government labs, and academia in the context of SC18. The goal is for each to hear the challenges faced by others, to learn about various approaches to addressing these challenges, and to have opportunities to exchange ideas and solutions. In addition to contributed talks, this workshop may feature invited talks on opportunities for collaboration, resource sharing, educator training, internships, and other means of increasing cross-fertilization between industry, government, and academia. Pedagogical tools, programming environments, infrastructures, languages, and projects for PDC and HPC 7. Employers' experiences with and expectation of the level of PDC and HPC proficiency among new graduates 8. Education resources based on higher-level programming languages and environments such as X10, Chapel, Haskell, Python, Cilk, Rust, CUDA, OpenCL, OpenACC, Hadoop, and Spark 9. Parallel and distributed models of programming and computation suitable for teaching, learning, and workforce development 10. Projects or units that introduce students to concepts relevant to Internet of Things, networking, or other topics in mobile devices or sensor networks 11. Issues and experiences broadening the participation of underrepresented groups (e.g., gender gap, ethnic gap, socio-economic gap) in the High Performance Computing community or through the use of High Performance Computing 12. Pedagogical techniques or tools that help write correct of parallel program such as light-weight formal methods and parallel debugging practices SUBMISSION GUIDELINES *Papers*: Authors should submit 8-10 page papers in pdf format through the submission site ( https://submissions.supercomputing.org/?page=Submit&id=SC18WorkshopEduHPCPa… ). Submissions should be formatted as single-spaced, double-column pages (IEEE format), including figures, tables, and references. All accepted papers will be published in the IEEE TCHPC Proceedings and will be included in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Accepted papers will be available before the workshop so attendees can read papers before attending the talks. *Peachy Parallel Assignments*: EduHPC-18 is also seeking submission of Peachy assignments. These are high-quality assignments in the spirit of Nifty assignments, previously tested in class, that are readily adoptable by other educators teaching topics in parallel and distributed computing. Initial submissions should be a 1-page PDF document describing the assignment and its context of use. The best peachy assignments will be invited to be presented at the workshop. We are investigating the possibility of including them in some form in the proceedings. Instructors love to give exciting assignments that highlight important applications while emphasizing important principles and techniques. Unfortunately, creating great assignments is time-consuming and even our best efforts do not always succeed. With this in mind, EduHPC is introducing a session showcasing "Peachy Parallel Assignments" - high-quality assignments, previously-tested in class, that are readily adoptable by other educators teaching topics in parallel and distributed computing. This effort is inspired by "Nifty Assignments" ( http://nifty.stanford.edu ). We invite submissions of "Peachy Parallel Assignments" to highlight in this special session. Assignments may be previously published, but the author must have the right to publish a description of it and share all supporting materials. We are seeking assignments that are 1) Tested - All submitted assignments should have been used successfully in a class. 2) Adoptable - Preference will be given to assignments that are widely applicable and easy to adopt. Traits of such assignments include coverage of widely-taught concepts, using common parallel languages and widely-available hardware, having few prerequisites, and (with variations) being appropriate for different levels of students. 3) Cool and Inspirational - Peachy assignments should be fun and inspiring for students. They encourage students to spend time with the relevant concepts. Ideal assignments are those that students want to demonstrate to their roommate. Assignments can cover any topics in Parallel and Distributed Computing. The current computing trend sees businesses and individuals moving toward a more centralized infrastructure, namely the cloud. On the one hand, as the computing infrastructure at data centers is highly complex and distributed, DS becomes essential for diagnosing and gaining insights of the system. On the other hand, the scale and nature of interaction between different components in the cloud present new challenges and push DS's state of the art. Another computing trend that has potential to drive DS is internet-of-things. Such complex systems consist of a large number of autonomous, heterogeneous devices communicating with one another in non-uniform manner. DS is valuable not only for discerning system properties but also for predicting the devices' emergent behavior. Finally, users in online social networks make up large distributed systems. Insights of user interaction and the network's collective behavior --- the study of which fits well into the realm of DS --- bring significant value to both the society and the business of social network providers. This special session seeks to bring together experts and practitioners in the domain of DS to discuss new opportunities and challenges for DS. The session is intended to bring together researchers and practitioners, so they can present the current status of their work and discuss the challenges they face in developing solutions and applications for agent-based simulations. Such simulations are expected to offer prediction and on-the-flow feedback for the better decision-making, bringing up means for both the implementation of more complex traffic management systems and end-user applications. Off-line and real-time analyses of data collected from infrastructured systems (e.g. real-time traffic information), mobile, distributed technologies (e.g. communication devices), and socially-build systems (e.g. social networks applications) are of great interest for shaping and influencing how ITS solutions are designed.
