CFP: 5th IEEE Workshop on Extreme Scale Programming Models and Middleware (ESPM2 2020)
by Shafi, Aamir 19 May '20

19 May '20

======================================================================== Call For Papers Fifth International IEEE Workshop on Extreme Scale Programming Models and Middleware (ESPM2 2020) to be held in conjunction with SuperComputing 2020, November 15 - 20, 2020 Atlanta, Georgia http://nowlab.cse.ohio-state.edu/espm2/ ======================================================================== The fifth edition of ESPM2 workshop, being proposed to be held as a full-day meeting with the Supercomputing (SC'2020) conference in Atlanta, Georgia focuses on programming models and runtimes for extreme scale systems. Next generation architectures and systems being deployed are characterized by high concurrency, low memory per-core, and multiple levels of hierarchy and heterogeneity. These characteristics bring out new challenges in energy efficiency, fault-tolerance and, scalability. It is commonly believed that software has the biggest share of the responsibility to tackle these challenges. In other words, this responsibility is delegated to the next generation programming models and their associated middleware/runtimes. This workshop focuses on different aspects of programming models such as task-based parallelism (Charm++, OCR, Habanero, Legion, X10, HPX, etc), PGAS (OpenSHMEM, UPC, CAF, Chapel, UPC++, etc.), BigData (Hadoop, Spark, Dask etc), Machine Learning (NVIDIA RAPIDS, Scikit-learn etc.), Deep Learning (Caffe, Microsoft CNTK, Google TensorFlow, Facebook PyTorch), directive-based languages (OpenMP, OpenACC) and Hybrid MPI+X, etc. It also focuses on their associated middleware (unified runtimes, interoperability for hybrid programming, tight integration of MPI+X, and support for accelerators/FPGAs) for next generation systems and architectures. The ultimate objective of the ESPM2 workshop is to serve as a forum that brings together researchers from academia and industry working in the areas of programming models, runtime systems, compilers, programing languages, and application developers. ESPM2 2020 will be held as a full day workshop in conjunction with the SuperComputing (SC 2020), on Sunday November 15th in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Topics ------ ESPM2 2020 welcomes original submissions in a range of areas, including but not limited to: * New programming models, languages and constructs for exploiting high concurrency and heterogeneity * Experience with and improvements for existing parallel languages and run-time environments such as: - MPI - PGAS (OpenSHMEM, UPC, CAF, Chapel, UPC++, etc.) - Directive-based programming (OpenMP, OpenACC) - Asynchronous Task-based models (Charm++, OCR, Habanero, Legion, X10, HPX, etc) - Hybrid MPI+X models - BigData (Hadoop, Spark, Dask etc.) - Machine Learning (NVIDIA RAPIDS, Scikit-learn etc.) - Deep Learning (Microsoft CNTK, TensorFlow, PyTorch) * Parallel compilers, programming tools, and environments * Software and system support for extreme scalability including fault tolerance * Programming environments for heterogeneous multi-core systems and accelerators such as KNL, OpenPOWER, ARM, GPUs, FPGAs, MICs, and DSPs Papers should present original research and should provide sufficient background material to make them accessible to the broader community. Please note the following: 1. The completed appendix must be at most 2 pages 2. The appendix is meant to provide information about the computing environment you used to produce your results, reducing barriers for future replication of your results by others in the community. 3. If a new software package is developed as part of the publication, it software must be downloadable by anyone without restriction to enable replication of your results by others in the community. - Note that this does not require you to make your code available in an open source manner. 4. A paper cannot be disqualified based on information provided or not provided in this appendix, nor if the appendix is not available. 5. The availability and quality of an appendix can be used in ranking a paper. In particular, if two papers are of similar quality, the existence and quality of the appendices can be part of the evaluation process. Proceedings Information ----------------------- The workshop proceedings will be published through IEEE TCHPC and included in the the IEEE Xplore digital library. However, please make sure you do not mention your own name or affiliation in the submission, and please do not include obvious references in the text that reveal your identity. A reviewer who has not previously seen the paper should be able to read it without accidentally learning the identity of the authors. Please feel free to ask the PC chairs if you have any questions about the double-blind policy of SSS 2020. SUBMISSIONS There are two types of submission: regular paper and brief announcement. - A regular submission must not exceed 15 pages (including the title, authors, abstract, figures, and references). Additional necessary details for an expert to verify the main claims of the submission may be included in a clearly marked appendix if extra space is needed. - A brief announcement submission must not exceed 5 pages and should not include any appendix. Any submission deviating from these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of its merits. It is recommended that a regular submission begins with a succinct statement of the problem being addressed, a summary of the main results or conclusions, a brief explanation of their significance, a brief statement of the key ideas, and a comparison with related work, all tailored to a non-specialist. Technical development of the work, directed to the specialist, should follow. Papers outside of the conference scope will be rejected without review. If requested by the authors on the cover page, a regular submission that is not selected for a regular presentation will also be considered for the brief announcement format. This will not affect consideration of the paper for a regular presentation. PUBLICATION Regular papers and brief announcements will be included in the conference proceedings. Conference proceedings will be published by Springer in the LNCS conference series. SPECIAL ISSUE Extended and revised versions of selected papers will be considered for a special issue of an international journal. PAPER AWARD Prizes will be given to the best regular paper and best student regular paper. A regular paper is eligible for the best student paper if at least one of its authors is a full-time student at submission time. Authors should clearly indicate whether their submission is eligible to be considered for the best student paper award (e.g., using a \thanks in the title). The PC may decline to confer awards or may split awards. For further information, please refer to the website: http://www.cse.msu.edu/~sandeep/SSS2020

CORRECTNESS 2020 at SC20 -- Call for Papers
by Cindy Rubio Gonzalez 15 May '20

15 May '20

======================================================================== CALL FOR PAPERS Fourth International Workshop on Software Correctness for HPC Applications (Correctness 2020) In conjunction with SC20: The International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis, November 15, 2020, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. In cooperation with IEEE TCHPC. https://correctness-workshop.github.io/2020/ ======================================================================== Dates ===== Paper submissions due: August 10, 2020 Notification of acceptance: September 21, 2020 Camera-ready papers due (firm): October 9, 2020 Scope ===== Ensuring correctness in high-performance computing (HPC) applications is one of the fundamental challenges that the HPC community faces today. While significant advances in verification, testing, and debugging have been made to isolate software errors (or defects) in the context of non-HPC software, several factors make achieving correctness in HPC applications and systems much more challenging than in general systems software: growing heterogeneity (architectures with CPUs, GPUs, and special purpose accelerators), massive scale computations (very high degree of concurrency), use of combined parallel programing models (e.g., MPI+X), new scalable numerical algorithms (e.g., to leverage reduced precision in floating-point arithmetic), and aggressive compiler optimizations/transformations are some of the challenges that make correctness harder in HPC. The following DOE report lays out the key challenges and research areas of HPC correctness: https://science.energy.gov/~/media/ascr/pdf/programdocuments/docs/2017/HPC_… As the complexity of future architectures, algorithms, and applications in HPC increases, the ability to fully exploit exascale systems will be limited without correctness. With the continuous use of HPC software to advance scientific and technological capabilities, novel techniques and practical tools for software correctness in HPC are invaluable. The goal of the Correctness Workshop is to bring together researchers and developers to present and discuss novel ideas to address the problem of correctness in HPC. The workshop will feature contributed papers and invited talks in this area. Topics ====== Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Formal methods and rigorous mathematical techniques for correctness in HPC applications * Frameworks to address the challenges of testing complex HPC applications (e.g., multiphysics applications) * Approaches for the specification of numerical algorithms with the goal of correctness checking * Error identification in the design and implementation of numerical algorithms using finite-precision floating point numbers * Tools to control the effect of non-determinism when debugging and testing HPC software * Scalable debugging solutions for large-scale HPC applications * Scalable tools for model checking, verification, certification, or symbolic execution * Static and dynamic analysis to test and check correctness in the entire HPC software ecosystem * Predictive debugging and testing approaches to forecast the occurrence of errors in specific conditions * Machine learning and anomaly detection for bug detection and localization * Correctness in emerging HPC programming models * Analysis of software error propagation and error handling in HPC runtime systems and libraries * Metrics to measure the degree of correctness of HPC software * Specifications to check the correctness of runtime systems * Large databases of bug reports and/or reproducible test cases of HPC software * Benchmarks to test the effectiveness of HPC correctness tools Proceedings =========== The proceedings will be archived in IEEE Xplore via TCHPC. Submissions and Format ====================== Authors are invited to submit manuscripts in English structured as technical or experience papers at a length of at least 6 pages but not exceeding 8 pages of content, including everything. Submissions must use the IEEE format. [Call for Papers][Energies]: Special Issue "Cloud Computing Systems and Energy Efficient Utilization"
by Alexey Lastovetsky 15 May '20

15 May '20

Energies Special Issue Information ( https://www.mdpi.com/journal/energies/special_issues/cloud_computing_energy… ) Dear Colleagues, In the current digital era, computing is prevalent, and the level of penetration of computing in society, industry, economy, science, and engineering will only increase. Therefore, the energy involved in computing—which was not considered a big issue in the past—is becoming a grand technological challenge. The proportion of total energy consumption represented by ICT is rapidly increasing. By 2030, it is predicted to consume around 50% of all the generated electricity, according to some prognoses. This situation is not sustainable, and extraordinary efforts are needed to increase energy efficiency in ICT. Cloud computing systems have demonstrated exponential growth over the last decade and quickly become the dominant computing infrastructure. By the end of 2020, two-thirds of enterprise infrastructure will be cloud-based; additionally, 82% of the workload will reside in the cloud (https://techjury.net/stats-about/cloud-computing/) Therefore, any improvements in the energy efficiency of cloud systems will also improve the global energy efficiency of computing. This Special Issue invites submissions addressing all aspects of energy efficiency in cloud computing systems at all levels. Manuscripts reporting accurate application-level power and energy predictive models, and energy measurement methods and tools are particularly welcome. Methods on the optimization of multiple objectives are also welcome but must include energy consumption as one of the primary objectives. Alexey Lastovetsky Guest Editor Energies (ISSN 1996-1073; CODEN: ENERGA) is a peer-reviewed open access journal of related scientific research, technology development, engineering, and the studies in policy and management and is published semi-monthly online by MDPI. Many real-world analytic workloads are a mix of graph and machine learning methods. Graphs play an important role in the synthesis and analysis of relationships and organizational structures, furthering the ability of machine-learning methods to identify signature features. Given the difference in the parallel execution models of graph algorithms and machine learning methods, current tools, runtime systems, and architectures do not deliver consistently good performance across data analysis workflows. In this workshop we are interested in graphs, how their synthesis (representation) and analysis is supported in hardware and software, and the ways graph algorithms interact with machine learning. The workshop’s scope is broad and encompasses the wide range of methods used in large-scale data analytics workflows. This workshop seeks papers on the theory, model-based analysis, simulation, and analysis of operational data for graph analytics and related machine learning applications. In particular, we are interested, but not limited to the following topics: • Provide tractability and performance analysis in terms of complexity, time-to-solution, problem size, and quality of solution for systems that deal with mixed data analytics workflows; • Discuss the problem domains and problems addressable with graph methods, machine learning methods, or both; • Discuss programming models and associated frameworks such as Pregel, Galois, Boost, GraphBLAS, GraphChi, etc., for building large multi-attributed graphs; • Discuss how frameworks for building graph algorithms interact with those for building machine learning algorithms; • Discuss hardware platforms specialized for addressing large, dynamic, multi-attributed graphs and associated machine learning; Besides regular papers, short papers (up to four pages) describing work-in-progress or incomplete but sound, innovative ideas related to the workshop theme are also encouraged.
