Held in even-numbered years since 1988, NOMS 2022 will follow the tradition of 34 years of NOMS and IM as the primary IEEE Communications Society's forum for technical exchange on management of information and communication technology focusing on research, development, integration, deployment, standards, service provisioning, and user communities. NOMS 2022 will feature several workshops to further disseminate fine-tuned research that is organized around the main conference theme: Network and Service Management in the Era of Cloudification, Softwarization and Artificial Intelligence. IEEE/IFIP NOMS 2022 invites proposals for one-day or half-day workshops, which will be held before or immediately after the main NOMS 2022 technical program. In parallel, production deployment, model complexity and diversity pushed for higher productivity systems, more powerful programming abstractions, software and system architectures, dedicated runtime systems and numerical libraries, deployment and analysis tools. Deep learning models are generally memory and computationally intensive, for both training and inference. Accelerating these operations has obvious advantages, first by reducing the energy consumption (e.g. in data centers), and secondly, making these models usable on smaller devices at the edge of the Internet. In addition, while convolutional neural networks have motivated much of this effort, numerous applications and models involve a wider variety of operations, network architectures, and data processing. These applications and models permanently challenge computer architecture, the system stack, and programming abstractions. Papers accepted for PASC22 will be presented as talks, and published in the Proceedings of the PASC Conference, accessible via the ACM Digital Library. A selection of the highest quality papers may be given the opportunity of a plenary presentation. In selecting papers for plenary presentation, the Papers Committee will place particular weight on impact, interdisciplinarity and interest to a broad audience. The goal of the PASC Conference Papers Program is to advance the quality of scientific communication between the various disciplines of computational science and engineering in the context of high performance computing. The program was built from an observation that the computer science community traditionally publishes in the proceedings of major international conferences, while domain science communities publish primarily in disciplinary journals – and neither of which is read regularly by the other. The PASC Conference provides a unique venue that enables interdisciplinary exchange in a manner that bridges the two scientific publishing cultures. The Proceedings of the PASC Conference (PASC22) are published in the Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM's) Digital Library. In recognition of the high quality of the PASC Conference papers track, the ACM continues to provide the proceedings as an Open Table of Contents (OpenTOC). This means that the definitive versions of PASC Conference papers are available to everyone at no charge to the author and without any pay-wall constraints for readers. SUBMISSION AND REVIEW The PASC22 Papers Program Committee (https://pasc22.pasc-conference.org/about/papers-program-committee/) is responsible for the paper evaluation process. The committee is chaired by Kate Evans (Oak Ridge National Laboratory) and Damian Rouson (Sourcery Institute) and is comprised of Domain Chairs who are specialists in their scientific fields. Papers will be evaluated on their significance, technical soundness, originality, and quality of communication. We employ a rigorous academic peer-review process: most notably, we allow the possibility for provisional acceptance (revision and author rebuttal), and specialized reviewers are solicited for each submission (there is no pre-selected standing committee of reviewers). The paper selection process thus combines the strengths of conference and journal publication schemes to provide an effective, high-impact publication venue in large-scale computational science. POST-CONFERENCE JOURNAL SUBMISSION Following the conference, authors will have the opportunity to develop their papers, and, where appropriate, associated open-source software, for publication in a relevant, computationally focused, domain-specific journal. The journal paper should be an expanded version of the conference paper (consistent with the ACM policy for major revisions [2]) presenting a more complete description of the work – a fuller introduction, deeper project description, additional results, etc. and may be accompanied by associated open-source software. To facilitate post-conference journal publications, the PASC Conference has formed collaborative partnerships with a number of high-quality scientific journals, including Computer Physics Communications (CPC) [3], the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems (JAMES) [4], and ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software (ACM TOMS) [5]. Members of the journals' editorial boards will work with the Scientific Committee in reviewing PASC papers and in identifying papers to be extended and submitted to partner journals. The ISC High Performance 2022 Conference call for tutorials is now open! (https://www.isc-hpc.com/tutorials-2022.html) The ISC tutorials are interactive courses focusing on key topics of high performance computing, networking, storage, and data science. Renowned experts in their respective fields will give attendees a comprehensive introduction to the topic as well as providing a closer look at specific problems. Tutorials are encouraged to include a "hands-on" component to allow attendees to practice prepared materials. Submitted tutorial proposals will be reviewed by the ISC 2022 Tutorials Committee, which is headed by Kathryn Mohror, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, USA as chair with Suren Byna, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, USA, as Deputy Chair. Attendance will require a Tutorial Pass. The ISC organizers will grant a 100% discount on the tutorial pass to the tutorial presenters. ISC 2022 registration fees will be published in early 2022. INTRODUCTION The number of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices is predicted to reach 38.6 billion by 2025. These connected devices, ranging from user devices to more complex systems, such as vehicles and power grids, are equipped with sensing, actuating, communication, processing, and storage capabilities, and they generate huge amounts of data of various types. However, the need to operate the scale of heterogeneous IoT devices while being performance-efficient in real-time is challenging. Typically, the data generated by the IoT devices are transferred to and processed centrally by services hosted on geographically distant clouds. This is untenable given the communication latency incurred and the ingress bandwidth demand. A new and disruptive paradigm spear-headed by academics and industry experts is taking shape so that applications can leverage resources located at the edge of the network and along the continuum between the cloud and the edge. These edge resources may be geographically or in the network topology closer to IoT devices, such as home routers, gateways, or more substantial micro data centers. Edge resources may be used to offload selected services from the cloud to accelerate an application or to host edge-native applications. The paradigm within which the edge is harnessed is referred to as â€œFog/Edge computingâ€ . The Fog/Edge computing paradigm is expected to improve the agility of service deployments, to allow the usage of opportunistic and cheap computing, and to leverage the network latency and bandwidth diversities between these resources. Numerous challenges arise when using edge resources, which require the re-examination of operating systems, virtualization and containers, and middleware techniques for fabric management. New abstractions and extensions to current programming and storage models are necessary to allow developers to design novel applications that can benefit from massively distributed and data-driven edge systems. Addressing security, privacy, and trust of the edge resources is of paramount importance while managing the resources and context of mobile, transient and hardware-constrained resources. The integration of edge computing and 5G will also bring new opportunities and unique challenges. Enabling machine/deep learning at the edge is critical for many applications. Lastly, emerging domains like autonomous vehicles and smart health need to be supported by fog and edge resources. CALL FOR PAPERS The conference seeks to attract high-quality contributions covering both theory and practice over systems research and emerging domain-specific applications related to next-generation distributed systems that use the edge and the fog. Toosi *LESS'22 organizers -- Complete call-for-papers vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv Despite the commercial success, there are several open research challenges in the area of serverless/FaaS such as, the handling of stateful functions, support for function composition patterns beyond simple chaining, how to exploit data locality, or the mitigation of cold-start effects. Furthermore, the rise in popularity of serverless/FaaS has led many researchers in the community to wonder whether this concept can be applied also outside of cloud computing. Internet of Things (IoT) applications could benefit from the FaaS programming model, but they are usually deployed on edge systems, which adds several challenges: there is no single entry point for all function invocations, hardware-software configurations are heterogeneous, or the mapping of advanced AI patterns (e.g. federated learning) is unclear. *LESS ‘22 solicits research contributions in the following areas: + Pervasive applications and services. Serverless is becoming the de facto standard for deploying new mobile applications, but the opportunities that can be unlocked by this paradigm in relation to pervasive applications and services have not yet been fully explored. + Pervasive deployments. The application of serverless to edge systems and opportunistic computing on user devices is a thriving research area, which may enable new applications that today cannot be realized or boost the adoption of applications that today have scalability issues with traditional tools. + Distributed computing. The FaaS programming model is a powerful abstraction, which already today fits many applications of business interest. It is, however, unclear whether the abstraction is sufficient for most or all pervasive applications relying on some form of distributed computing (e.g., management of the state of functions). + Pervasive networking. Serverless platforms rely on an underlying abstraction of the network, which is designed and optimised for relatively small data transfers, but pervasive applications and systems may be more data-intensive. + Pervasive analytics. Many pervasive applications rely on AI/ML for automated detection and decision-making. The role of serverless and FaaS in this domain has not been defined yet, even though they can promise significant benefits in terms of simpler management and automatic scaling. + Energy Efficiency. The stateless, event-driven, and distributed mindset triggered by serverless could make it suitable for the adoption in edge computing, where low-power hardware and energy harvesting technologies are key enablers for scenarios such as remote areas. Two types of Workshops may be proposed: Regular Workshops and Project Workshops. Regular Workshops should focus on a specific scientific subject on the scope of CISTI 2022 but not directly included on the main conference areas. Each regular workshop will be coordinated by an Organizing Committee composed of, at least, two researchers in the field, preferably from different institutions and different countries. The organizers should create an international Program Committee for the Workshop, with recognized researchers within the specific Workshop scientific area. Each workshop should have at least 10 submissions and 5 accepted papers in order to be conducted at CISTI. Project Workshops are intended to promote the dissemination and facilitate the future exploitation of EU Latin-American and national project results such as EU/FP7, EU/Horizon, CSIC, FCT, QREN, Portugal 2020, Fund. Gulbenkian, CYTED, CAPES, CNPq, FINEP and other Projects/funding sources. The results to be disseminated may be preliminary project results (for unfinished projects) or the project final results (for already finished projects). Each project workshop should be directly related to a Project funded in a competitive manner by a National/International Science Organization. The Workshop should be coordinated by an Organizing Committee composed by at least two researchers including the Principal Investigator of the project. Each Workshop will have 1 article offered for 10 articles with paid registration, 2 articles offered for 20 articles with paid registration, and 3 articles offered for 40 articles with paid registration. The selection of Workshops will be performed by CISTI 2022 Conference Chairs. Workshops full papers will be published in the conference main proceedings in specific Workshop chapters. Proceedings will be submitted for indexation by ISI, SCOPUS, EI-Conpendex, INSPEC and Google Scholar.
