First Workshop On Approximate Computing - In conjunction with HiPEAC 2015
by Nikos Bellas 11 Sep '14

**Call for Papers ** ***1st Workshop on Approximate Computing* *In conjunction with HiPEAC 2015* ** *January 19, 2015, Amsterdam * http://wapco.inf.uth.gr <http://ppopp15.soe.ucsc.edu/> Research in the last few years has focused on approximate computing as a means to overcome the energy scaling barrier of computer systems. Energy savings can be achieved by utilizing the inherent error resilience of algorithms in many application domains such as signal processing, multimedia, data analytics and computational engineering, among others. Indeed, fully accurate arithmetic in specific phases of those applications may have only a marginal effect on output quality, especially if combined with error correction frameworks such as iterative refinement. For example, accurate execution may be traded off with lower energy consumption by providing the ability to scale supply voltage below nominal values and accommodate errors at the software layers, or use a simpler approximate solution such as lower precision arithmetic. Designing such systems in a general-purpose computing environment requires a holistic view of all layers from algorithms, programming models, system software, and hardware down to the transistor level. This full-day workshop, which is organized in conjunction with HiPEAC 2015 <http://www.hipeac.net/2015/amsterdam>, is an inter-disciplinary effort to bring together researchers from the areas of mathematics, computer science, computer and electrical engineering to discuss challenges, risks and opportunities of approximate computing in all design layers. Papers will be published online in this website, but not in proceedings. Submitting to WAPCO will not preclude future publication opportunities. Website is http://wapco.inf.uth.gr/ *We are soliciting original papers on topics that include but are not limited to the following:* * Formal and mathematical methods for approximate computing * Programming languages and models for approximate computing * Compiler and system software support for approximate computing * Hardware support for approximate computing * Hardware-software interaction for approximate computing * Applications that can benefit from approximate computing * Simulation and modeling techniques for approximate computing * Position papers on the potential and limitations of approximate computing Important Dates *Nov 7, 2014: * Submission deadline *Nov 28, 2014: * Notification of decision *Dec 12, 2014: * Final manuscript due Organizers Nikolaos Bellas University of Thessaly and CERTH, Greece Dimitrios Nikolopoulos Queen's University Belfast, UK Andy Burg EPFL, Switzerland Uwe Naumann RWTH-Aachen, Germany Peter Debacker IMEC, Belgium Frederick Vivien INRIA, France Georgios Karakonstantis EPFL, Switzerland and QUB, UK Costas Bekas IBM Research -- Zurich Will Sawyer CSCS, Switzerland Vincent Heuveline University of Heidelberg, Germany Thomas Ludwig University of Hamburg and DKRZ Enrique Quintana -- Orti Universitat Jaume I de Castellon, Spain -- Nikolaos Bellas Associate Professor ECE Department University of Thessaly Greece http://inf-server.inf.uth.gr/~nbellas

CFP: IEEE TETC SI on "Methods and Techniques for Processing Streaming Big Data in Datacentre Clouds"
by DEEPAK PUTHAL 11 Sep '14

11 Sep '14

[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message] *Call for papers:* IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing Special Issue on "Methods and Techniques for Processing Streaming Big Data in Datacentre Clouds" http://www.computer.org/cms/Computer.org/transactions/cfps/cfp_tetcsi_mtpsb… IMPORTANT DATES ***************************** Submission Deadline: June 1 2015 Reviews Completed: September 1 2015 Major Revisions Due (if Needed): October 1 2015 Reviews of Revisions Completed (if Needed): November 1 2015 Minor Revisions Due (if Needed): December 1 2015 Notification of Final Acceptance: February 1 2016 Publication Materials for Final Manuscripts Due: March 1 2016 Publication date: Second Issue 2016 (June Issue) DETAILS ABOUT THE ISSUE ***************************** Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging paradigm that has gained a significant interest from both academia and industry. IoT is a part of Future Internet and comprises many billions of Internet connected Objects (ICOs) or 'things' where things can sense, communicate, compute and potentially actuate as well as have intelligence, multi-modal interfaces, physical/ virtual identities and attributes. ICOs can include sensors, RFIDs, social media, actuators (such as machines/equipments fitted with sensors and deployed for mining, oil exploration, and manufacturing operations) as well as lab instruments (e.g., high energy physics synchrotron), and smart consumer appliances (smart TV, smart phone, etc.). This IoT vision has recently given rise to the notion of IoT big data applications that are capable of producing billions of data stream and tens of years of historical data to provide the knowledge required to support timely decision making. Some of the emerging IoT big data applications, e.g. smart energy grids, syndromic bio-surveillance, environmental monitoring, emergency situation awareness, digital agriculture, and smart manufacturing, need to process and manage massive, streaming, and multi-dimensional (from multiple sources) data from geographically distributed data sources. Despite recent technological advances of the data-intensive computing paradigms (e.g. the MapReduce paradigm, workflow technologies, stream processing engines, distributed machine learning frameworks) and datacentre clouds, large-scale reliable system-level software for IoT big data applications are yet to become commonplace. As new diverse IoT applications begin to emerge, there is a need for optimized techniques to distribute processing of the streaming data produced by such applications across multiple datacentres that combine multiple, independent, and geographically distributed software and hardware resources. However, the capability of existing data-intensive computing paradigms is limited in many important aspects such as: (i) they can only process data on compute and storage resources within a centralised local area network, e.g., a single cluster within a datacentre. This leads to unsatisfied Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of timeliness of decision making, resource availability, data availability, etc. as application demands increase; (ii) they do not provide mechanisms to seamlessly integrate data spread across multiple distributed heterogeneous data sources (ICOs); (iii) lack support for rapid formulation of intuitive queries over streaming data based on general purpose concepts, vocabularies and data discovery; and (iv) they do not provide any decision making support for selecting optimal data mining and machine algorithms, data application programming frameworks, and NoSQL database systems based on nature of the big data (volume, variety, and velocity). Furthermore, adoption of existing datacentre cloud platform for hosting IoT applications is yet to be realised due to lack of techniques and software frameworks that can guarantee QoS under uncertain big data application behaviours (data arrival rate, number of data sources, decision making urgency, etc.), unpredictable datacentre resource conditions (failures, availability, malfunction, etc.) and capacity demands (bandwidth, memory, storage, and CPU cycles). It is clear that existing data intensive computing paradigms and related datacentre cloud resource provisioning techniques fall short of the IoT big data challenge or do not exist. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Programming abstractions for extedmding existing data intensive computing paradigms to multiple datacentres - Technical foundations for selection of data mining and machine learning algorithms Streaming data query and indexing systems based on semantic web concepts - IoT big data application specific ontology models for capturing heterogeneous data from multiple sources - Decentralised data flow optimisation and management techniques across multiple datacentres - Techniques for petabyte efficient no-SQL query-based IoT big data processing - QoS optimized parallel data analytic techniques beyond traditional relational database systems - Knowledge driven, predictive datacentre resource allocation and provisioning for streaming data - Innovative IoT big data application use cases - Techniques for providing a secure end-to-end connection between users and data sources SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ***************************** Submitted articles must not have been previously published or currently submitted for journal publication elsewhere. As an author, you are responsible for understanding and adhering to our submission guidelines. You can access them at the IEEE Computer Society web site, www.computer.org. CALL FOR PAPERS SIMULATION MODELLING PRACTICE AND THEORY SPECIAL ISSUE ON "Techniques And Applications For Sustainable Ultrascale Computing Systems" www.journals.elsevier.com/simulation-modelling-practice-and-theory/call-for… SUBMISSION DEADLINE: October 30, 2014 Guest Editors: Prof. Helen Karatza. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Prof. Jesus Carretero. University Carlos III of Madrid, Spain. "Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory" (SIMPAT) is seeking original manuscripts for a Special Issue on "Techniques And Applications For Sustainable Ultrascale Computing Systems" scheduled to appear in September 2015. The special issue will provide a forum for presenting the latest research on techniques and applications to make ultrascale systems, envisioned as a large-scale complex system joining parallel and distributed computing systems, maybe located at multiple sites, that cooperate to provide solutions to the users, more sustainable. This special issue focuses on the software side, aiming at bringing together researchers from academia and industry interested in the design, implementation, and evaluation of services and system software mechanisms to improve sustainability in ultrascale computing systems with a holistic approach. As a growth of two or three orders of magnitude of today’s computing systems is expected, including systems with unprecedented amounts of heterogeneous hardware, lines of source code, numbers of users, and volumes of data, sustainability is critical to ensure the feasibility of those systems. Due to those needs, currently there is an emerging cross-domain interaction between high-performance in clouds or the adoption of distributed programming paradigms, such as Map-Reduce, in scientific applications, the cooperation between HPC and distributed system communities still poses many challenges towards building the ultrascale systems of the future. Especially in unifying the services to deploy sustainable applications portable to HPC systems, multi-clouds, data centers, and big data. Areas of Interest The topics of specific interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following: • Existing and emerging designs to achieve sustainable ultrascale systems. • Simulation techiques to enhance sustainability of ultrscale computing systems. • High-level parallel programming tools and programmability techniques to improve applications sustainability on ultrascale platforms. (model driven, refactoring, dynamic code generation, unified services, middlewares, …). • Synergies among emerging programming models and run-times from HPC, distributed systems, and big data communities to provide sustainable execution models (increased productivity, transparency, elasticity, …). • New energy efficiency techniques for monitoring, analyzing, and modeling ultrascale systems, including energy efficiency metrics for multiple resources (computing, storage, networking) and sites. • Eco-design of ultrascale components and applications, with special emphasis on energy-aware software components that help users to shape energy issues for their applications. • Sustainable resilience and fault-tolerant mechanisms that can cooperate throughout the whole software stack to handle errors. • Fault tolerance techniques in partitioned global address space (e.g. PGAS, MPI, hybrid) and federated cooperative environments. • Data management optimization techniques through cross layer adaptation of the I/O stack to provide global system information to improve data locality. • Enhanced data management lifecycle on scalable architectures combining HPC and distributed computing (clouds and data centers). • Experiences with applications, high-level algorithms, and services amenable to ultrascale systems. Submission Guidelines Submitted papers must be written in English and must describe original research which has not been published, and is not currently under review by other journals or for conferences. The author guidelines for preparation of manuscripts are available online. Manuscripts should be no longer than 20 pages, including the title page, abstract, or references. MPI has been robust, and been able to evolve, without fundamentally changing the model and specification. For this and many other reasons MPI is currently the de-facto standard for HPC systems and applications. However, there is a need for re-examination of the message-passing model for extreme-scale systems characterized by asymptotically decreasing local memory and highly localized communication networks. Likewise, there is a need for exploring new innovative and potentially disruptive concepts and algorithms partially to explore other roads than those taken by the MPI 3.0 standard. The aim of workshop is to bring together developers and researchers to present and discuss innovative algorithms and concepts in the Message Passing programming model and to create a forum for open and potentially controversial discussions on the future of MPI in the exascale era. Topics of interest (but are not limited to) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Development of scalable Message Passing collective operations. * Communication topology mapping interfaces and algorithms. * Innovative algorithms for scheduling/routing to avoid network congestion. * Integrated use of structured data layout descriptors. * One-sided communication models and RDMA-based MPI. * MPI and threading. * Interoperability of Message Passing and PGAS models. * Integration of task-parallel models into Message Passing models. * Fault tolerance in MPI. * MPI I/O. Paper Submission and Publication --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are two submission categories: - Regular research paper: submission of full paper. - Hot topic abstract: submission of an extended abstract. These submissions target work-in-progress research on potentially controversial topics in Message Passing. Regular Papers and extended abstracts should be submitted electronically at: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=exampi14 <https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=exampi14> Regular paper submissions are limited to 10 pages in the IEEE format, see: http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.ht <http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html> ml The 10-page limit includes figures, tables, and appendices, but does not include references, for which there is no page limit. Hot topic extended abstracts are limited to 3 pages in the IEEE format, see: http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.ht <http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html> ml The 3-page limit includes figures, tables, and appendices, but does not include references, for which there is no page limit. Accepted regular research paper will be archived in both the ACM Digital Library and IEEE Xplore, by virtue of SIGHPC. Authors of accepted papers will be required to sign the ACM copyright form. Instructions for preparing regular papers for the proceedings will be emailed to authors of accepted papers. Important Dates --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Regular paper submission: September 5, 2014 * Hot topic extended abstracts submission: September 20, 2014 (extended) * Acceptance notification of regular paper: September 22, 2014 * Acceptance notification of hot topic extended abstracts: September 29, 2014 * Final regular papers due: October 6, 2014 Organizers --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Erwin Laure, KTH Royal Institute of Technology Stefano Markidis, KTH Royal Institute of Technology Jesper Larsson Träff, TU Wien Daniel Holmes, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre Mark Bull, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre William Gropp, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Masamichi Takagi, NEC Corporation in Japan Lorna Smith, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre Mark Parsons, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre Program Committee --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Erwin Laure, KTH Royal Institute of Technology Stefano Markidis, KTH Royal Institute of Technology William Gropp, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Marc Snir, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Ewing Lusk, Argonne National Laboratory John Mellor-Crummey, Rice University Jesper Larsson Träff, TU Wien Torsten Hoefler, ETH Zürich Hans-Christian Hoppe, Intel Daniel Holmes, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre Mark Bull, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre Masamichi Takagi, NEC Corporation in Japan Lorna Smith, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre Mark Parsons, Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre Contact --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please contact Stefano Markidis at markidis at kth.se

Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this call. ================================================================= CALL FOR PAPERS ADAPT: 5th International Workshop on Adaptive Self-tuning Computing Systems 21 January 2015, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (co-located with HiPEAC 2015) http://www.adapt-workshop.org New Community-Driven Paper Evaluation Option! Continuing Artifact Evaluation! ================================================================= Computing systems are rapidly evolving into heterogeneous machines featuring many processor cores. This leads to a tremendous complexity with an unprecedented number of available design and optimization choices for architectures, applications, compilers and run-time systems. Using outdated, non-adaptive technology results in an enormous waste of expensive computing resources and energy, while slowing down time to market. The 5th International Workshop on Adaptive Self-tuning Computing Systems is an interdisciplinary forum for researchers, practitioners, developers and application writers to discuss ideas, experience, methodology, applications, compilers, hardware, practical techniques and tools that can improve or change existing and future computing systems using self-tuning technology. Such systems should be able to automatically adjust their behavior at all levels (hardware and software) and improve various characteristics including execution time, energy usage, reliability, size and costs based on empirical, dynamic, iterative, auto-tuning, statistical, collective, bio-inspired, machine learning and alternative techniques while fully utilizing available resources. === Optional Community-Driven Evaluation === Although not mandatory, we encourage authors to opt-in for our new experimental publication model where papers, artifacts and experimental results are pre-validated by the community. If you wish to participate in this experiment, simply submit your paper as usual on the submission website and send an email to the PC chairs indicating you wish to take part. We will give you instruction about how to upload your paper to arXiv and we will open a discussion thread on the reddit social platform to allow anyone to evaluate and comment on it (the authors will be allowed to respond to all the comments at any time). One week before the notification deadline, we will close the discussion thread and the members of the program chair will reach their decisions based on their own evaluation but also from the comments of others (including the authors) found on the discussion thread. We hope that this will help us make the reviewing process more fair, transparent and interactive while picking up papers that can raise interesting discussions at the workshop as described in our vision paper available in ACM DL and arXiv. === Optional Artifact Evaluation === To continue our public effort started in 2007 to enable collaborative, systematic and reproducible research and experimentation on auto-tuning combined with machine learning, crowdsourcing and run-time adaptation, we particularly welcome papers where all related research material including code, data and experimental results is shared and validated by the community. Therefore, we encourage authors to either provide a paragraph in their submitted papers describing how to validate their experimental results or to submit artifacts for validation after their paper is accepted. See our reproducibility wiki for more details: http://c-mind.org/reproducibility ==== Important Dates ==== * Paper submission deadline: 24 October 2014 * Author notification: 19 November 2014 * Final paper version: 3 December 2014 ==== Program Chairs/organisers: ==== * Christophe Dubach (University of Edinburgh, UK) * Grigori Fursin (INRIA Saclay, France) ==== Program Committee: ==== * Rosa M.
