================================================================= Fourth Workshop on Open Source Supercomputing (OpenSuCo-4) Dallas, Texas, USA Held in conjunction with Supercomputing 2018 CALL FOR PAPERS & LIGHTNING DEMOS http://www.opensuco.community ================================================================= Increased specialization is an effective way for HPC to continue performance scaling at the end of MOSFET scaling. To decrease design cost - in both money and time, rapid hardware prototyping methods combined with flexible software stacks and programming models must be explored. Open source solutions may provide the best opportunities for specialization and the OpenSuCo Workshop seeks to encapsulate a wealth of effort in design, prototyping and cross-functional collaboration of open source hardware, software and scientific computing projects in a singular point of technical discussion and exchange. As the limits of MOSFET/Dennard scaling grow ever closer, the high performance/technical computing community continually seeks new methods by which to continue scaling system performance and, potentially, system efficiency. The goal of this workshop is to engage the HPC community and explore open source solutions for constructing and operating an HPC system - from silicon to applications. Important Dates ============================= Submission Deadline: 2018, Sept 30, 23:59 AOE Conference-Ready Deadline: 2018, October 26 Camera-Ready Deadline: 2018, Nov 2 Topics of Interest ============================= We invite the community to submit both papers and proposals for "lightning demos." The demo session will provide attendees the opportunity to give short (5-min) demos of software or hardware technology that could forward the construction of open source HPC systems. 4th Workshop on Heterogeneous High-performance Reconfigurable Computing (H2RC 2018) at SC18: Extended abstracts due Aug. 15
by Jason D. Bakos 08 Aug '18

08 Aug '18

========================================================================== ** Call for Papers ** ========================================================================== Fourth International Workshop on Heterogeneous High-performance Reconfigurable Computing (H^2RC) ========================================================================== Held in conjunction with Supercomputing 2018 Sunday Morning, November 11, 2018 Dallas, TX http://h2rc.cse.sc.edu ========================================================================== Submission Deadline: August 15, 2018 (1 to 4 page extended abstracts) ========================================================================== As conventional von-Neumann architectures are suffering from rising power densities, we are facing an era with power, energy efficiency, and cooling as first-class constraints for scalable HPC. FPGAs can tailor the hardware to the application, avoiding overheads and achieving higher hardware efficiency than general-purpose architectures. Leading FPGA manufacturers have recently made a concerted effort to provide a range of higher-level, easier to use high-level programming models for FPGAs. Such initiatives are already stimulating new interest within the HPC community around the potential advantages of FPGAs over other architectures. With this in mind, this workshop, now its fourth year, brings together HPC and heterogeneous-computing researchers to demonstrate and share experiences on how newly-available high-level programming models, including OpenCL, are already empowering HPC software developers to directly leverage FPGAs, and to identify future opportunities and needs for research in this area. ========================================================================== Topics ========================================================================== Submissions are solicited that explore the state of the art in the use of FPGAs in heterogeneous high-performance compute architectures and, at a system level, in data centers and supercomputers. FPGAs may be considered from either or both the distributed, parallel and composable fabric of compute elements or from their dynamic reconfigurability. We particularly encourage submissions which focus on the mapping of algorithms and applications to heterogeneous FPGA-based systems as well as the overall impact of such architectures on the compute capacity, cost, power efficiency, and overall computational capabilities of data centers and supercomputers. A non-comprehensive list of potential topics of interest is given below: 1. FPGAs in the cloud and data center 2. Cloud and data center applications 3. Leveraging reconfigurability 4. Benchmarks 5. Implementation studies 6. Programming languages, tools, and frameworks 7. Future-gazing 8. Community building ========================================================================== Special theme for 2018 ========================================================================== For this year's workshop we especially encourage the submission of papers on the topic of FPGA-based support for non-volatile memory and near-memory computing. Non-volatile memory (NVM) technologies such as Flash and Phase-Change memory potentially facilitate shared storage in the microsecond regime. In emerging systems, NVM may serve as a new level of memory hierarchy or as a networked resource. To this end, early work in developing both system-level interfaces to NVM (such as NVMe) and network-level interfaces to NVM (such as RDMA over Converged Ethernet 2) rely heavily on FPGAs as low-latency intermediaries. ========================================================================== Prospective authors are invited to submit relevant contributions as an extended abstract in ACM SIG Proceedings format of up to four pages. You can submit your contribution(s) through a link on the H2RC website: http://h2rc.cse.sc.edu The authors of accepted papers will be invited to present their work at the workshop. ========================================================================== Important dates: ========================================================================== Submission Deadline: August 15, 2018 Acceptance Notification: September 18, 2018 Camera-ready Manuscripts Due: October 15, 2018 Workshop Date: November 11, 2018 ========================================================================== Workshop Format: ========================================================================== H2RC is a half-day Sunday workshop. It will be comprised of: -- Keynote and invited talks -- Talks selected among paper submissions ========================================================================== Organizing Committee: ========================================================================== Michaela Blott, Xilinx Franck Cappello, Argonne National Lab Torsten Hoefler, ETH Zurich Jason D. 2nd CFP for Workshop on Education for High Performance Computing (EduHPC), 2018
by Erik Saule 07 Aug '18

07 Aug '18

You will find attached two calls for the EduHPC 2018 workshop, to be held on November 11, 2018 in Dallas, Texas, and colocated with SC18. EduHPC is a workshop concerned with the education of High Performance Computing, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Computation Science, and Data Science; not only in a dedicated course but at all levels of the computing education stages. EduHPC is seeking two types of submissions. Submissions of Regular Papers are meant to discuss deeply educational material and techniques. Submission of Peachy Assignments are meant to present exciting assignments that can be used in classes. See the call for paper and call for peachy assignment. *==============================================================* *EduHPC 2018 - CALL for PAPERS* *==============================================================* *EduHPC-18: Workshop on Education for High-Performance Computing (EduHPC-18)* *KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON CONVENTION CENTER DALLAS* *Dallas, Texas* *Co-located with SC18* *November 11, 2018* https://grid.cs.gsu.edu/~tcpp/curriculum/?q=eduhpc18 High Performance Computing (HPC) and, in general, Parallel and Distributed Computing (PDC) has become pervasive, from supercomputers and server farms containing multicore CPUs and GPUs, to individual PCs, laptops, and mobile devices. Even casual users of computing devices now depend on parallel processing. Therefore, it is important for every computer user (and especially every programmer) to understand how parallelism and distributed computing affect problem solving. It is essential for educators to impart a range of PDC and HPC knowledge and skills at multiple levels within the educational fabric woven by Computer Science (CS), Computer Engineering (CE), and related computational curricula including data science. Companies and laboratories need people with these skills, and, as a result, they are finding that they must now engage in extensive on-the-job training. Nevertheless, rapid changes in hardware platforms, languages, and programming environments increasingly challenge educators to decide what to teach and how to teach it, in order to prepare students for careers that are increasingly likely to involve PDC and HPC. This workshop invites unpublished manuscripts from academia, industry, and government laboratories on topics pertaining to the augmentation of undergraduate and graduate education in Computer Science and Engineering, Computational Science, and computational courses for both STEM and business disciplines with PDC and HPC concepts. Recently, the workshop also extended its focus to data science and computational science education. Additionally, we highly encourage manuscripts that validate their innovative approaches through the systematic collection and analysis of information to evaluate their performance and impact. The workshop is particularly dedicated to bringing together stakeholders from industry (both hardware vendors and employers), government labs, and academia in the context of SC18. The goal is for each to hear the challenges faced by others, to learn about various approaches to addressing these challenges, and to have opportunities to exchange ideas and solutions. In addition to contributed talks, this workshop may feature invited talks on opportunities for collaboration, resource sharing, educator training, internships, and other means of increasing cross-fertilization between industry, government, and academia. This effort is in coordination with the NSF/TCPP curriculum initiative on Parallel and Distributed Computing ( https://grid.cs.gsu.edu/~tcpp/curriculum/?q=home ) and the Center for Parallel and Distributed Computing Curriculum Development and Educational Resources (CDER at https://grid.cs.gsu.edu/~tcpp/curriculum/?q=node/21183 ). Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: 1. Pedagogical issues in incorporating PDC and HPC in undergraduate and graduate education, especially in core courses 2. Novel ways of teaching PDC and HPC topics 3. Data Science and Big Data aspects of teaching HPC/PDC including early experience with data science degree programs 4. Evidence-based educational practices for teaching HPC/PDC topics that provide evidence about what works best under what circumstances 5. Experience with incorporating PDC and HPC topics into core CS/CE courses and in domain Computational Science and Engineering courses 6. Pedagogical tools, programming environments, infrastructures, languages, and projects for PDC and HPC 7. Employers' experiences with and expectation of the level of PDC and HPC proficiency among new graduates 8. Education resources based on higher-level programming languages and environments such as X10, Chapel, Haskell, Python, Cilk, Rust, CUDA, OpenCL, OpenACC, Hadoop, and Spark 9. Parallel and distributed models of programming and computation suitable for teaching, learning, and workforce development 10. Projects or units that introduce students to concepts relevant to Internet of Things, networking, or other topics in mobile devices or sensor networks 11. Issues and experiences broadening the participation of underrepresented groups (e.g., gender gap, ethnic gap, socio-economic gap) in the High Performance Computing community or through the use of High Performance Computing 12. Pedagogical techniques or tools that help write correct of parallel program such as light-weight formal methods and parallel debugging practices Travel support: 10-15 travel awards of up to $1500/award for the NSF/TCPP Curriculum Early Adopter authors of papers, peachy assignments or posters. KEYNOTE There will be one keynote address. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES *Regular Papers*: Authors should submit 8-10 page papers in pdf format through the submission site ( https://submissions.supercomputing.org/?page=Submit&id=SC18WorkshopEduHPCPa… ). Submissions should be formatted as single-spaced, double-column pages (IEEE format), including figures, tables, and references. All accepted papers will be published in the IEEE TCHPC Proceedings and will be included in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Accepted papers will be available before the workshop so attendees can read papers before attending the talks. *SC Reproducibility Initiative*: Considering SC’s focus on reproducibility, we highly encourage authors of the regular papers to provide an artifact description appendix (up to two pages) along with their manuscript, describing the details of their software environments and computational experiments to the extent that an independent person could replicate their results. More information on the reproducibility initiative can be found on SC18's website ( https://sc18.supercomputing.org/submit/sc-reproducibility-initiative/ ). In the context of educational research, the artifact description appendix may contain the detailed description of the tools or techniques, classroom evaluation settings, metrics, evaluation results etc. *Peachy Parallel Assignments*: EduHPC-18 is also seeking submission of Peachy assignments. These are high-quality assignments in the spirit of Nifty assignments, previously tested in class, that are readily adoptable by other educators teaching topics in parallel and distributed computing. Initial submissions should be a 1-page PDF document describing the assignment and its context of use. The best peachy assignments will be invited to be presented at the workshop. We are investigating the possibility of including them in some form in the proceedings. More information is available on EduHPC-18 website ( https://grid.cs.gsu.edu/~tcpp/curriculum/?q=eduhpc18 ). To provide some historical perspective, since 2013, EduHPC has been held successfully against the backdrop of the SC, the main conference for all things HPC. This effort is in coordination with the NSF/TCPP curriculum initiative ( http://www.cs.gsu.edu/~tcpp/curriculum ) for CS/CE undergraduates supported by NSF and its NSF-supported Center for Parallel and Distributed Computing Curriculum Development and Educational Resources (CDER). For more information about the workshop, including list of topics of interest, please see https://grid.cs.gsu.edu/~tcpp/curriculum/?q=eduhpc18 *PEACHY PARALLEL ASSIGNMENTS*: Course assignments are integral to student learning in computing and also play an important role in student perceptions of the field. Instructors love to give exciting assignments that highlight important applications while emphasizing important principles and techniques. Unfortunately, creating great assignments is time-consuming and even our best efforts do not always succeed. With this in mind, EduHPC is introducing a session showcasing "Peachy Parallel Assignments" - high-quality assignments, previously-tested in class, that are readily adoptable by other educators teaching topics in parallel and distributed computing. This effort is inspired by "Nifty Assignments" ( http://nifty.stanford.edu ). We invite submissions of "Peachy Parallel Assignments" to highlight in this special session. Assignments may be previously published, but the author must have the right to publish a description of it and share all supporting materials. We are seeking assignments that are 1) Tested - All submitted assignments should have been used successfully in a class. 2) Adoptable - Preference will be given to assignments that are widely applicable and easy to adopt. Traits of such assignments include coverage of widely-taught concepts, using common parallel languages and widely-available hardware, having few prerequisites, and (with variations) being appropriate for different levels of students. 3) Cool and Inspirational - Peachy assignments should be fun and inspiring for students. They encourage students to spend time with the relevant concepts. Ideal assignments are those that students want to demonstrate to their roommate. Assignments can cover any topics in Parallel and Distributed Computing. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: *Peachy Assignment Track*: Initial submissions should be a 1-page PDF document describing the assignment and its context of use. What is the main idea? What concepts are covered? Who are its targeted students? In what context have you used it? What prerequisite material does it assume they have seen? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Are there any variations that may be of interest? This initial description should be submitted through Linklings in the EduHPC Peachy Assignments track. https://submissions.supercomputing.org/?page=Submit&id=SC18WorkshopEduHPCPe… If accepted, authors will be asked to submit their (a) 1-page camera-ready paper, and (b) a poster to be presented and published on the workshop website, and (c) assignment (the file actually given to students) and any supporting materials (given code, etc.) to be archived and maintained on CDER courseware repository ( https://grid.cs.gsu.edu/~tcpp/curriculum/?q=courseware_management ). Publication through IEEE TCHPC. EduHPC is currently investigating the possibility of including the Peachy Assignment as part of the proceedings published through IEEE TCHPC in one form or another. Contact us for more information. *Regular Paper Track*: EduHPC is also seeking submissions of papers on the education of High Performance Computing, Parallel and Distributed Computing, Data Science, and Computational Sciences. Call for Papers: Fourth International IEEE Workshop on Extreme Scale Programming Models and Middleware (ESPM2 2018)
by Hari Subramoni 06 Aug '18

06 Aug '18

======================================================================== Call For Papers Fourth International IEEE Workshop on Extreme Scale Programming Models and Middleware (ESPM2 2018) to be held in conjunction with SuperComputing 2018, November 11 - 16, 2018 Dallas, Texas http://nowlab.cse.ohio-state.edu/espm2/ ======================================================================== Next generation architectures and systems being deployed are characterized by high concurrency, low memory per-core, and multiple levels of hierarchy and heterogeneity. These characteristics bring out new challenges in energy efficiency, fault-tolerance and, scalability. It is commonly believed that software has the biggest share of the responsibility to tackle these challenges. In other words, this responsibility is delegated to the next generation programming models and their associated middleware/runtimes. This workshop focuses on different aspects of programming models such as task-based parallelism (Charm++, OCR, Habanero, Legion, X10, HPX, etc), PGAS (OpenSHMEM, UPC, CAF, Chapel, UPC++, etc.), BigData (Hadoop, Spark, etc), Deep Learning (Caffe, Microsoft CNTK, Google TensorFlow), directive-based languages (OpenMP, OpenACC) and Hybrid MPI+X, etc. It also focuses on their associated middleware (unified runtimes, interoperability for hybrid programming, tight integration of MPI+X, and support for accelerators/FPGAs) for next generation systems and architectures. The ultimate objective of the ESPM2 workshop is to serve as a forum that brings together researchers from academia and industry working in the areas of programming models, runtime systems, compilers, programming languages, and application developers. ESPM2 2018 will be held as a full day workshop in conjunction with the SuperComputing (SC 2018), on Monday, November 12th in Dallas, Texas, USA. Topics ------ ESPM2 2018 welcomes original submissions in a range of areas, including but not limited to: * New programming models, languages and constructs for exploiting high concurrency and heterogeneity * Experience with and improvements for existing parallel languages and run-time environments such as: - MPI - PGAS (OpenSHMEM, UPC, CAF, Chapel, UPC++, etc.) - Directive-based programming (OpenMP, OpenACC) - Asynchronous Task-based models (Charm++, OCR, Habanero, Legion, X10, HPX, etc) - Hybrid MPI+X models - BigData (Hadoop, Spark, etc), and - Deep Learning (Caffe, Microsoft CNTK, Google TensorFlow) * Parallel compilers, programming tools, and environments * Software and system support for extreme scalability including fault tolerance * Programming environments for heterogeneous multi-core systems and accelerators such as KNL, OpenPOWER, ARM, GPUs, FPGAs, MICs, and DSPs Papers should present original research and should provide sufficient background material to make them accessible to the broader community. Keynote Speaker --------------- We are happy to announce that Prof. Laxmikant V. Kale, the Paul and Cynthia Saylor Professor in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will deliver the keynote address at ESPM2'17. Panel Information ----------------- Details coming soon! Paper Submission and Registration --------------------------------- Abstracts and papers need to be submitted via the Linklings conference system. Linklings URL for ESPM2'18: Coming soon! Submissions should not exceed 8 pages using IEEE conference format with 10pt font. Each submission must be a single PDF file (see https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html) Papers must be submitted in PDF format (readable by Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 and higher) and formatted for 8.5" x 11" (U.S. Letter). Papers should present original research and should provide sufficient background material to make them accessible to the broader community. It should not be submitted in parallel to any other conference or journal. Reproducibility Initiative -------------------------- For all technical papers submitted to ESPM2'18, we request the authors to include an "Artifact Description Appendix". A template for how authors should format their appendix will be provided on the submission site. Please note the following: 1. The completed appendix must be at most 2 pages 2. The appendix is meant to provide information about the computing environment you used to produce your results, reducing barriers for future replication of your results by others in the community. 3. If a new software package is developed as part of the publication, it software must be downloadable by anyone without restriction to enable replication of your results by others in the community. - Note that this does not require you to make your code available in an open source manner. 4. A paper cannot be disqualified based on information provided or not provided in this appendix, nor if the appendix is not available. 5. The availability and quality of an appendix can be used in ranking a paper. In particular, if two papers are of similar quality, the existence and quality of the appendices can be part of the evaluation process. Proceedings Information ----------------------- The workshop proceedings will be published through IEEE TCHPC and included in the the IEEE Xplore digital library. Each research paper will be taken through a comprehensive peer review process by an internationally recognized group of experts in the field. Papers will be evaluated along the metrics of a) Quality of Presentation; b) Novelty / Originality; c) Relation to State of the Art; d) Technical Strength; e) Significance of Work; f) Relevance to Workshop; and g) Availability and quality of the "Artifact Description Appendix".
